Hooked up with Capemike for what turned out to be a 6 hour marathon of fly fishing at his honey hole. Looked like it was going to be a nice rainy overcast day
on the water when we made plans to get together but just as we arrived at the pond things cleared out. Fishing was not fast and furious by any means. We were
not sure what to expect with a lot of fish in local ponds spawning now. But in the end it appeared the LMB were done spawning and things did heat up as the day
wore on. We really had a fine outing.
The action late in the day with the Gowdy casting a size 10 flashdancer muddler for big bluegill and pumpkinseeds was non stop!! Great fun with some beautiful fish all in their seasons best colors.
I was fishing two rods. One nice vintage Garcia Four Star Bass Bugging Action 8wt with of course a bass bug (Dahlberg Diver) and the other was my trusty Berkley Curt Gowdy 6/7wt rigged with a reel loaded with the new Sharkskin Magnum 6wt line.
I have to say that line does cast far BUT (a big but here) after six hours of fishing it literally wore a grove in the crease of my index finger which started to bleed during the peak of the sunset action.
This turned out to be a good thing as I absolutely couldn't tolerate stripping that line thru my finger any more so I picked up my bass bug tossed it out in the middle of the pond. No pads or structure nearby literally just randomly in the middle. It was near dusk and fish seemed to be roaming around based on the rises and fish Mike was picking up on his *gasp* conventional spin setup with a sweet wood bluegill imitation.
Anyway toss the white dahlberg diver out to the middle and let it set. Water is like glass now. Twitch....whoosh its gone. Seconds later a big fat largemouth bass is heading for the stars with the dahlberg set cleanly in the corner of the mouth. I am thinking hmmm that looks like a nice fish. A couple more tailwalks across the pond later I am thinking whoa this fish is even better than I thought. When I finally am able to coax him in boat side we see a beautiful 4 pounder. A magnificent largemouth on the fly.
The Garcia Bass Bugging Action 8wt was purchased over the winter and appeared to have never been fished before I purchased it. It was a truly excellent first day on the water taking a several bass in the 2lb class from the pads and one very fine 4lb bass and the casting action of the rod with a bug was superb. The only problem I have now is deciding which rod to bring with me bugging next time
Thanks to CapeMike for the photos!!
