Silk trim wraps |

I was planning to use (new & clean) pearsalls fly tying silk for trim wraps as I have it to hand - or is this a bad idea?

So long as you're talking Gossamer or Naples thread, it's exactly the same as silk rod wrapping thread. Lots of pros and persnickety amateurs use silk
for tipping even when they are using nylon for the main wraps.

I have been giving some thought to tipping and may have a change of heart about never using it. Tipping not bound under the main wrap would be much easier to
replace than the entire wrap if it were to fray on the edge. I suspect this is the long forgotten original purpose of tipping anyway. To be maximally
effective, I would go with the next smaller size thread from the wrap and add it after the first coat of varnish on the main wrap had dried. Or I could inspect
my rods once a year. Don

I was thinking about doing the trim wrap first against making tape to keep it straight, then CP x2, then main wrap (gudebrod nylon) no CP, then coats of spar
varnish

Sounds like a plan to me! Probably the best way to avoid dark little tags under your main (translucent) wrap.
Don, it would be nice to think tipping served some function, like intermediates once did. I suspect tipping has never been more than showing off extra workmanship, though. -CC |

It occurred to me one day when I was applying finish to a untipped wrap that tipping would have insured a coat of finish on the old edge for those of us who
don't go onto the blank. Makes sense to have the tipping in a finer diameter to insure good coverage. Don

I've been thinking about silk for tipping, too. The problem with narrow trim wraps is their tendency to unravel while packing and trimming them. The
smaller diameter of silk should allow you to do something that looks like a 4-turn trim wrap that actually has 6-8 turns.

Pack before you trim. Works better for me. Don
