Sport Posts: 1 (05/13/09 06:27:38) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Greetings Gentlemen, I have just ordered myself a Takada 2pc 7'3" #3 from Blue Dun (my first glass fly rod) after trawling through this helpful forum, I would be grateful for any further advice on what reel and line would be a good choice to balance the rod, I'm hoping to find something appropriate reelwise at the Redditch vintage tackle fair this Sunday? many thanks in advance cheers Craig p.s. Is anyone else going to Redditch?

A Takada is a very nice first glass rod. Please post some photos when it arrives! For my taste, a classic Hardy Lightweight reel would be a good choice. Any of the Lightweights will hold a 3 weight line, so pick the one that balances the rod the best. I've never handled a Takada rod, so I don't know which of the reels would be best. My second choice would probably be an Abel, such as the TR-Light or TR1. There are some beautiful Japanese made reels too. Tom

I have all three Lightweights, the Flyweight has a WF3 on it to match a Hardy Gem, The Featherweight a DT4 and the LRH has a DT5 both of which see a lot of use with my cane rods, I'm hoping the Takada is not as fast the Gem, it's an excellent brook rod but a I prefer casting with a DT line. Which Japanese reels do you prefer and do you like the Marryat? cheers Craig

I sold that reel (ouch) to Alpago and shipped it to him in INdonesia. Some of us really like our Marryat reels. I have several and have bought and sold many. There is an addition Marryat topic or two on the classic flyrod forum. I like your rod choice.

I'm inclined towards a Young's Pridex or similar but I do like the looks of the Marryat. I have and enjoy a Quiet Loop (no long available) 3 wt. which is another fine Japanese rod. You will find CAPS reels on the navybass site and they are available from Hanson's Outfitters in Calgary. http://www.hansons-outfitters.com/ The website needs work so I call them and they are great guys. I wonder it the J. AUstin Forbes Aerial would work for this rod. I use one on a 7' McFarland 3 wt. Bulldog has a silver one, mine is bronze. Last Edited By: Rockthief 05/13/09 11:04:56. It will be interesting to read your take on it. Hisao at Blue Dun describes it as "slow as the lash of a dog". Mr. Takada builds a beautiful rod. John

I'd fall to a Hardy Featherweight or a marquis #4-5. I admit that i prefer the #5 - very versatile. Enjoy... gorgeous craft on that rod... NB

If your Hardy is too light, I'd second the suggestion to consider an Abel TR. They are NICE reels too!

Any idea what your Takada 7'3" 3 wt weighs (oz.)? I'd guess that your Featherweight would work nicely as noted above. You can get a spare spool from Harris Sportsmail for $85 shipped! If you want something new for it, I'd agree with others that a fine Japanese reel makes sense for a fine Japanese rod. Sport Posts: 7 (05/15/09 08:46:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Thanks for all your helpful comments, Just a brief update for all the Takada fans hereabouts, as far as I'm aware the rod has not been shipped yet because Blue Dun needed to confirm if I wanted an aluminium tube to package the rod in (another Y5000+) and I'm hoping to find out out if the additional purchase will require a second payment. I also asked Tatsuya if he could recommend a reel that would match the rod, I'm still waiting for a reply. Docbluedevil, I've no idea what the rod weighs and I didn't even consider the fact until I decided to try and find a reel to match the rod before it's been delivered! We have several vintage tackle fairs in the UK and the next one is on Sunday, there's usually a lot to choose from and the prices can be very reasonable, which is useful because most of my budget has gone already on the rod (so sadly a Kineya is out of the question), as you suggest a spare spool is a good idea but I've recently seen mint Korean made lightweights selling for less than the cost of a spare spool!! How does the weight of of a glass fly rod compare to one of cane or carbon, I assume it's similar to cane because my coarse rods are. The answer to this question might help me a lot because I can match up a reel to a cane rod easily enough but I'm afraid I should be looking for something to match a carbon rod? cheers Craig

I'm sure you could easily find out the info of the rod weight by emailing your contact at Blue Dun or Takada. I'm still going to guess that your Featherweight will fit the bill. Another option is a Hardy Featherweight clone that's made in Japan, the Daiwa 700 reel (w/ a cool gun-metal blue color); there's one on ebay currently for like $50 US.

With a Tibor Spring Creek (~4oz.) the balance point with line out the guides was about 1" from the front of the grip. I would venture a guess that the 7'3" 3wt 2pc model would be well under 3oz.

Sadly I've been disappointed too many times to buy anything but the rarest 'unmissable' items off ebay and prices at the tackle fairs are usually much more reasonable, if only you can wait until the next one. Since that is less 12 hours from now and I've had such a generous response to my questions, I think even with my eyes shut I'll be able to pick out a replacement reel for the DT4 that will be coming off the Featherweight. thanks again everybody. Cameron, you said it - the total cost of the rod so far is JPY47750 and once it arrives there will be a bill for import duty to pay too!! Hopefully by then I'll have been out and caught half a dozen wild brownies and it's value will be far beyond such trivial things! cheers Craig
