I thought that investing in a line winder would be helpful for cleaning, spooling, converting from LH to RH and back.
I've discovered the Reel-E-Good line winder as well as a Struble line winder. Any experience with either or other suggestions?

Spooling backing and fly line: Line winders? |
Lead | |

Well, I just received some H&H fly lines and some backing and need to spool 'em up on various reels.

I bought the reel-e-good winder because I found it for a reel-e good price at Harbor Freight. I thought it was going to be piece of junk, but its reel-e pretty
nice. I have no complaints.

At the risk of being viewed as REALLY cheap, I use stuff that is already hanging around the fly tying bench as a line
winder. First, I tape a pencil to the benchtop (photo 1). Next, I grab an empty fly line spool and put it on the pencil (photo 2). A little tape on the end
of the pencil keeps the spool from falling off. Stick a pencil in a spool hole to use as a crank. Now I can wind lines, backing, etc. onto the empty spool.
I hold the fly reel on the remains of a rod that was remodeled by UPS. Before that, I just held the reel in my hands.
Cheap? Absolutely. Effective? Certainly. Elegant? Not! Tom ![]()

LOL. Tom, great idea!
I now have a set up I can use for changing lines on the rod: 2 pencils and masking tape! My current way is even less elegant and cheaper. When removing/cleaning line from the reel, I just let it fall onto the floor and kinda spread it out so it decreases the chances of tangling. And then I reline the reel by keeping the line between my toes. |

I got a new reel last week for my Tadpole and wanted the line from another on it.
So, I took a 1 foot section of pool noodle and wound the line onto it by hand and then just reeled it onto the new reel. Cheap, effective, and nobody saw me do it so I got away with it. UNTIL NOW ! :-)

I have the struble and really do not care much for it. I do not have the bench mount for it and that would help but it still has allot to be desired. The
winder I have that I would not go without is the anglers image winder. You can adjust it for various sizes. I like large when removing line and it will
shrink down to the line form the spools. I cringed at spending the money on one of the line winders and my wife bought it for me one year and now I do not how
I would do without it.
Anglers image winder is the best in my opinion. Russell |

For taking line from a reel to clean or change I use my Anglers image Line winder.
Funny thing, I just pulled out the packaging to re-read the instructions and realized there is a method to lining a reel with this device. Les |

I got the Reel-E-Good winder shortly after getting a cat. It's OK, but one of the plastic spools didn't hold up.

Regarding the Ree-E-Good winder, I've heard that the spindle is too wide for most fly line spools to fit on, and people have had to drill the holes bigger
to fit. Is this true?

Fellows...you mean the rest of you don't have your wife hold a pencil and a spool while I noisily spool a reel with backing and then a fly line? HA...

This is actually becoming a very comical thread, imo.
Cameron - I laughed out loud when you wrote about having your wife to hold the spool w/ a pencil. I've totally done that before, and my wife gave me evil looks, muttering, "Will you hurry up! I can't believe I agreed to this!" I haven't cajoled her to do it again . . . thus my need for a line winder. dman - I don't know what to say, except that your set-up is over-the-top and ridiculous . . . and I love it! I still can't figure it out how it works from the pics. But I'm more curious what your wife's face looked like and what her first words were when you plopped that on the dining room table with some reels and fly line. |

Another vote for the Angler's Image folding winder. I like the fact it is portable and I can stash it in my gear bag. There have been a few times I needed
to replace a fly line on an extended fishing trip. The other thing I like about it is, the winded coil size is adjustable. That allows me to wrap an old line
in really large loose coils for storage or so it easily fits back on the factory spool.

How does one spool backing from the Angler's Image folding winder onto a reel. It isn't obvious to me from the picture.

Doc,
I tie an overhand know with a loop in the backing, drop the loop onto one of the "prongs", then begin to wind the crank. I rolls on evenly and will unwind without knots or kinks. This works for putting backing on or off. The same process applies to line. I hope I answered your question. Les |

I get it now, keebranch.
Backing to winder, then winder to reel. Sounds like a 2 step process though vs. a 1 step process with the Ree-e-good option, which is backing to reel. |

Yes. Or the reverse if I'm just removing line to be store or cleaned.
In the past Like many others here, I have found myself asking my wife to help hold the pencil/spool to put backing or line on. I always get the "look"and a response like "I hope you don't expect me to get the knots out." |

Well, I decided to go ahead with the Reel E Good winder system. I thought about making my own version of it, but I'm pretty sure my fabrication would be
more costly and less effective. I'll give y'all a report after I use it.
