Three Chapters...now FOUR CHAPTERS! |
Lead | |
|
I know that I've been a bit absent around the board the past few weeks but with our second child arriving any day now the wife has been in full
"nesting mode" and I've been busy getting the yard straight, nursery finished, working the job, family time, and to top it off was even was able
to sneak away THREE separate times this week and go fly fishing. Amazing.

Chapter One: Private Pond
|
One of the fellows that I work with mentioned to me that he had access to a private pond that was owned by his family just outside of Lexington. I'm
finding that these ponds can literally be angling gold mines and seldom do they disappoint. We met Monday right after work and as we got out of our vehicles
I could see bream dotting the edge water of the pond. Two carp breezed by together and a few decent sized largemouth bass were fanning their beds.
Over the course of the next ninety minutes or so I easily caught a couple dozen bream and a couple largemouth bass as well. These bream were all quite large considering how many of them were in the pond. They were pushovers for rusty brown Briminators and Bull Creek Crayfish as the photos will attest...
If you notice the rod, a South Fork Classic Series nine foot five weight, makes a wonderful pond stick. Look for a future review of this interesting fly rod soon on The Fiberglass Manifesto blog. |

Chapter Two: Saluda River Trouting
|
Tuesday morning I packed up my trout gear and drove to a section of the Saluda River I had not been in the past six years or so. I met up with one of the
fellows from the Trout Unlimited Chapter. Neat to see what again that I hadn't fished in so long.
Why haven't I am taking advantage of this river all along? This "FISH LOCAL" mantra of Cornmuse's is starting to make more and more sense.
T.F.M. repping on the Honda Element. If anyone wants a couple T.F.M. decals send me a PM with your address and I'll send you a few.
Morning on the river. This river is a weird mix of trout, striper, gar, largemouth bass, bream, smallmouth bass, and a few other species too. Strange I know.
I found this trout in a deep long run. Beautiful fish for this water.
It has always weirded me out a little that there are trout in this river and Spainish moss in the trees.
Double nymph rigs, indicator, and the South Fork nine foot five weight made easy work of this river. I'm really starting to like this fly rod a lot.
I lost a brute in this run that approaced twenty inches. I'll be back to find him. On the water at 07:15 and off the water by 10:45. Chores to get done at the house.

Chapter Three: Southern Spey
|
OK...disclaimer...my two hander rod is NOT fiberglass...but a medium action graphite rod that is really quite amazing. The ECHO Dec Hogan with the Skagit head
is a great system. I had an excellent time casting it...though I didn't touch a fish all morning.
The ECHO Dec Hogan 13'3" two hander and a Cliff Outdoors Bugger Barn fly box stacked tight with flies for the river.
More flies at a different angle. I can't wait to put one of those Big Eye Clouser Minnow in a striper's mouth.
This is big water and you have to be very carefully while wading. Strong current and deep runs make it risky when wading. Thankfully I've got my Folstaf to help keep me upright.
More fly box flies to show off. Hope they like chartreuse and white.
More Big Eye Clouser Minnows ready for action.
Repping my "Blanco Honky" t-shirt. An amusing blog to check out if you haven't see it before.
Breaking down the gear before heading to the house. I'm really impressed with this whole two hander thing so far. Need more practice. Need to put a fish on it too. I guess that is what next week is for.

Cameron,
Just send Dave a check for that rod. I don't think you will sleep well without it. I got to the pond at work on Wednesday, just before a large thunderstorm moved in. Like the one Cameron describes, this pond can be a great producer. Along with the normal panfish and small bass, there are sterile grasscarp living in this pond that were stocked in 1987. These are BIG carp. I've seen them finning along in the past, but always out of casting range. Wednesday I had a shot, even though I had a 5 weight rod. I cast a brown nymph at it anyway, but I couldn't quite get the fly in front of the carp. After a cast where the carp swam the other way, I picked up my fly line and felt it stick for a second. Then a big bow wave swam off to the middle of the pond. Apparently there are at least two of those big fish left. Time to start packing the 7/8 weight rod again. Cliff's Buggert Barn...best streamer box on the market IMHO. Cameron, I am intrigued (sp?) by the switch rod thing....might be a great thing for a
streamer fisherman. Great Pix!
Happy Trails, and best wishes for your upcoming birth event! wacokid54 |

Heh Cam, when you do get your first one on the long rod...you'll understand why I'm wanting to get the long handled land ghost net, haha!!!!
Great story, I'm getting my new license tomorrow and taking the young'ns out to the lake shore...

That is so great to have all the fishing together... you NEED 3wt 6 feet to 10wt 9' and several two handed rods. Life is good! : )

Trout are more glamorous but pound for pound bream are hard to beat. Nice. Fish locally! I can definitely wrap my mind around that philosophy.

Nice photos Cameron, I have an 8' version of that South Fork rod and it has become my favorite one to fish. That's a nice crayfish pattern as well,
have to try and tie some of those up as they definitely look productive.

Well...good that I got my time on the water in last week because right now we're at the hospital in a labor and delivery room. We should have a new baby
boy before the day is out!

Nice pics Cam. Reading about all this pond busting has me itching to try a little, however, my SFRC 6'6" 2wt. might be just a little too light for it.
Good luck with the new young'n and congrats!

Nice report Cam. Those are great photos and good news about the impending arrival of another glass fanantic.

Cam, congrats. I have been at the hospital since Friday night at midnight. I didn't even have a chance to get my fishing in pre-birth due to HIGH water on
every body of water in a 30-mile radius. Way to go on catching those gills!
