I make a Styrofoam kickboat that is cheap, light, and unsinkable. I hardly use em anymore, cause i always fish with my dogs, and while Madi-Sue can sit on it just fine while I fish, my bordercollie Abi is a bit too much. A buddy has one of the commercial kickboats, he is forever tangled in all the gadgets, do-dads and oars, and the thing is a monster to carry around.

Here's some pics...
The bigger boat is 5'8" X4' and 8"thick. Smaller boat is 4'x 4' and is my backpacking boat, as it folds in two, then attaches to a backpack frame. I am 150lb soaking wet. Most of my boats for guys to about 180lbs are 5' X 4'.
To make boat of any size, go buy 4 sheets of white "beadboard" which is styrofoam isulation, is easiest to get in 4x8ft sheets 2" thick. It can be had in thicker sheets too. The pink stuff is more money but may be less likely to soak up water, never tried it. Anyway, glue sheets together with Contech brand sealer, can't remember name, is just like liquid nails. Spead thin and get within 1/2" of edges, try not to smear to edges as it is hard to sand/form. Put sheet of plywood or something like it on stacked and glued sheets then very heavy objects on plywood, let dry. Should have taken you about 15 minutes.
Next day, take plywood off, mark your cuts for opening and size and take hand saw and cut. Is super easy to cut thru. Now go to 2nd hand store and buy an old iron. Practice on some of your scrap, but use the iron to smooth the edges and the cut surfaces, it will help seal and strengthen surfaces. Should now look sorta like a kickboat. Another 20 minutes.
Cut hunk of 1" pcv for footrest/handle if you want one. You will want one on larger boat, makes it easy to carry and move around. Cut PCV about 6" longer than feet opening, and mark 3" in on each end, this is to help get it centered when inserted. Take a scrap hunk of PCV, cut "saw" teeth in one end, use this to "drill" holes into sides of feet opening. Now add plenty of glue, and insert PCV footrest, you may wrestle with this a bit. Ten minutes.
Coating boat, bunch of options, easiest is just lots of coats of latex housepaint. There are also rubbericed roof coating, white and black, they work well, and the boat in the backpack frame is coated with the white roofing coating, then the damaged areas covered with the black stuff. If you coat whole boat with black stuff it will get hotter than hades. YOu can also use the Contech brand coating (I'll find the name, sorry) and this makes a VERY tough, sturdy coating, but is a *%@++ to put on, use a roller, need several coats, and is a MESS that will not come off of anything. Also, it is not UV protected, and will start to rot after a long time in the sun, so should be coated with anything, house paint etc, just to give it some UV protection. An hour or two over a couple days to let coats dry.
Your boat is done. It will get a few dings and dents, and if the styrofoam is exposed, it will very, very,slowly soak up water, never enough to be a problem, other than it becomes heavier, and will slowly drip dry in your car etc. So if I see dings, I let the boat dry for a few days and coat ding with whatever I have in front of me.
For a seat get one of those folding camp seats, and just plop it down as in the pics.
BTW that is my grandson displaying the boats.
I did build one for a customer with oar locks, and it worked fine, I just like em simple.
