Hit a local flea market this morning with Andy M. and ended up byng a Hardy Perfect 3 1/8 in reel. Though I'm definitely more drawn to the blue collar types (J.W. Youngs, Laurentians), this one was calling to me. Andy said the reel was solid and that it was a decent deal. I'm looking for a little info on this one - Andy said the markings inside the reel correspond to the maker's name. This one has the number "38" on each of the pieces and the letter "Y" on the inside of the frame. That letter doesn't correspond to any of the listed initials on the Hardy Website. Anyone have any insight on the number and the letter? Thanks for your wisdom... Snook

A Perfect at a flea market is bound to be a great buy, especially compared to ebay prices. Does your reel have an alloy foot instead of ribbed brass? That would be my guess, and that your reel was probably made in the 70s. The numbers and letters are part numbers, not artisans marks. The artisans marks disappeared sometime in the 50s.

Does that help narrow things down? I can try and take some digital pics if you think that would be worthwhile. The guy had a Meeks 55 reel that I was all set to buy for Andy, but by the time I had returned from the bank machine, we think the seller decided he didn't want to part with both reels and gave me some line about having sold that one in the intervening 20 minutes. (I left a deposit on the Hardy.)

OK, your reel is from the mid- to late-50s I'm still sure the marks are just parts references

Many JS reels around that time Raise the question on Clark's. I bet the Blind Cat Juggler can answer this.

Youngs are "Blue Collar" reels? Um...those are high end reels in my collection...ha. What a find for a flea market. Our flea markets here in the South are filled with knock off clothing, ripped DVD's and CD's, boiled peanuts, and O.P.J. (Other People's Junk). Post photos if you get a chance.

This Andy, is he a quiet guy who uses understatement often? He must be a good friend, or else he just didn't have $19.50 with him. Actually, he would have needed 21.50 so he could hand you a couple of dollars and say, "I'll buy the coffee if you get it. I'll stay here and look this junk over," Or just as you were reaching for the reel Andy could say to the vendor, "I'll give $20 for that old reel. Who? No, I'm not with him. But I don't think he wants it anyhow."

This is one that I bought from Marty Keane, for a few $$$ (!) more than you paid. WOW! I was told that the "Y" designation indicated a "parts" reel. This one is circa 1947. Yours managed to retain more of the original finish. NICE!

Thanks again to Andy for everything, but also for adding the pic! The number marking and "Y" on the reel are positioned just as can be seen in the pic that Ron posted. Is it fair to conclude that the brass ribbed reel foot is indicative of a Perfect from a certain time period? pre-1970's? And the "Y" indicates a post-WWII period of assembly through the 1950's or so? thanks again.

This Thursday, I hit the local TU meeting for a tackle swap to give Old Yankee a hand. They had a silent auction and I picked up this Hardy Glaskona Trout Fly 8 ft 6 wt (2/2) for a song. I found where they were made between 1961-66, but was wondering if you guys could shed any more light on history of the rod. Any ideas on the origin of the blank? thanks again, Snook
