South Bend Oren-o-matic question |

I have obtained an Oren-O-Matic 1140 Model D. It's in a used condtion but is in good nick. However I want to give it a bit of a clean. Being an
Automatic reel, I don't really want to open it up until I know if there any any pitfalls or things I should be wary of. I don't want springs and
things flying in all directions.... Anything I should know about before I start turning the screws....?
Cheers. |

I think it may be illegal to clean and lube an automatic fly reel. You spit tobacco juice on the outside to protect the finish. The mechanism itself is lubed
via sloshing around in the bottom of an aluminum boat in the bilge water with leakage of 2-cycle outboard motor oil mixed in.
Actually, of course, I hope someone will put in the technical detail on your particular reel. They had very nice finish and style for their type. There will be one honking major spring in the side with the large housing and winding dome, and then various gears and small springs on the other side. A man can have a fun time taking one apart, but it's seldom necessary. If you can take it down enough to remove the spool, that's enough to flush out and lube everything. The drive spring is packed with grease and probably needs no attention at all. Here's a garage sale good one--Martin brand--that was broken but I got for the spare spool, foot, and line guard. I feel quite certain some parts were damaged or missing. Most of the major US brands are fairly similar in design.

I have taken apart a few automatics and have had few problems. The main thing is after you remove the screw that holds on the spring cover is not to
lift it straight up---instead turn it counter clockwise until the spring releases from the spring holder (I not sure what the official name is). If the spring
should come out of the cover and unwind it is not the end of the world--just start at the outside of the cover and slow put the spring back into the cover--be
patient.

Go to this site: http://dkyfishvintage.hp.infoseek.co.jp/oreo-o-matic.html and the top
2 pictures at the left are copies of the factory manual for South Bend auto reels. Mediocre instructions, but all I know of. Good luck!

I can say from experience, it's a very straight forward process to take apart an automatic reel. I have done so on numerous occasions. As a matter of
fact, it was a South Bend model that I first took apart some 40 years ago. I've been fascinated with autos ever since.
Please note that I have yet been able to get a single one back together. Let me know if you need an unassembled auto reel spring for your South Bend, I have a pristine unused 40 year old one.
