Cameron arrives early AM on Tuesday with his Ultimate 12 for a day on the creeks, put-in is two blocks from here so really easy. Coffee and Raisin Bran at 7:30 and away we go. I elected to leave the Propel peddle system at the outfitter's- conferred with the outfitter and it just seemed like a distraction on this particular fishing trip. If I end up buying a U-12 it won't be with the Propel anyway as any dough I have will have to go to much more basic accessories. Shoutout to Time Out Sports in Mt. Pleasant. Great folks, very accommodating. Not pushing the Ultimate or the vendor- this will be an honest review. I'm fishing a St Croix 8-6 8WT and a Fenwick 7-6 6WT, long rods for a kayak by NC mountain freshwater standards but this is a whole new ballgame for this ff-in-salt novice. Found some locally-tied Clousers and shrimp patterns to complement Cameron's massively fine ties... so another shoutout to The Charleston Angler... all these folks seem to know the Native Watercraft folks on a first name basis... Now, if you could just find some red crocs for that "in" look. Seriously, we have this fly guy here in Texas(a good friend) who has a bright yellow yak and drives a bright yellow Pathfinder, and is always sporting some beautiful yellow crocs!!!!! Somebody told me he bought a new Harley; and i bet its yellow!!!!!

Easy to stand and cast from and a very dry and comfortable ride. The only thing I would do different next time is possiblty get the U-14, but at the time of purchase I had a Tacoma crew cab and there was no way to fit a 14' boat in the bed. Now I have a Forrester and it would be no problem. The 14'er would make windy paddles on the coast a little nicer and the optional rudder would be nice, too. On the other hand, the 12'er is light enough to toss on my shoulder and carry down to the water. I don't think I could manage to do that with a U-14 and rudder. Here's a pic from the march issue of Canoe and Kayak - I'm in a borrowed U-14 for the article.

It's been a LONG day since I finally had the Element packed to go about midnight last night, slept a few hours, and was out the door by 05:00 this morning. I pulled into the middlemac spot on Edisto Island right at 08:00. Always great to get down and spend a day with the McGuire's. Two Native Ultimate 12's. GREAT BOATS! middlemac and I ready to embark on a day of paddling. It didn't take middlemac but a few minutes to get comfortable in the kayak and then he was casting to all the likely spots. Ummm...what will work? I still don't know. I spooked one redfish at a creek mouth and had a couple of tugs and that was it. Unbelievable. Oh well...today was all about getting aquainted with the kayaks. middlemac's Ultimate had the rudder and mine did not. I'm thinking I want one. One of Cornmuse's smallmouth ties ends up looking pretty good in saltwater too. "Chef" middlemac fixed us up a fine lunch of fried chicken, fresh vidalia onions, deviled eggs, and crackers. Great to take a few minutes to eat... ...and to toast two friends fishing and kayaking together. Good times. Thanks for the invite middlemac! I had a great time today. PeteStiles...cool photo. After paddling the 12's around all day, mdiddlemc and I both agreed that we would like to get 14.5 Tandem Ultimate. The 12 is a neat boat...but having something a little larger will be nice. We had a terrific intro to the Native Watercraft Ultimate 12s today on Scott Creek. Cameron, thanks for making your third long drive to Edisto Island! After a huge rainstorm overnight, the day began dry and sunlit- perfect. We were able to pack the two yaks and all gear to the put-in a few blocks away in Cameron's Element- one on top, the other stuck sideways in the back with the rear seats folded. As Pete says, this is the benefit of the smaller boats... Hey Pete- that's the same damn redfish Cameron bonked on the head after he'd tracked it for a few minutes! (kidding, Cam thought he lined over. I admit he got way closer to a touch today than I did...) The boats were similar (but different) with angler package feaures; mine had the cool left-hand-op rudder, and was fitted for the Propel peddle system (but I left the peddles behind); mine also lacked the two footbeds, unfortunately not provided by the otherwise excellent outfitter who was admittedly busy with a whole bunch of stuff on Monday morning. He suggested a stake anchor instead of a weight which proved to be fantastic in the shallower sections and during mid-low tide. Cameron casting early in the morning light Birds everywhere- willets and pipers here on an oyster outcrop. A highlight of my afternoon was chatting with a marsh wren face-to-face, him (her?) refusing to give ground three feet away after I approached a nesting site. I crapped out and withdrew. Scouting in the grass At lunchtime Cameron clipped off old crap on an 8wt of mine and tied up a nail knot for a leader in maybe three minutes. Hey... fish with this guy...! Cool Hand Luke casting to swirling redfish. Fun! I'll have the 12 down here through Saturday, will amend this post with techy details of yakking the 12s tomorrow when my arms have recovered. middlemac Last Edited By: middlemac 04/15/09 10:23:04. Very comfortable seat. Very stable hull design....yes, you can fish standing up in it. I have also found another very comfortable position for both fishing and paddling. I put a tackle box right in front of the seat area and sit on it with my knees down in the tumnnels on each side. It gets you in a nice, upright position (great for the lower back!) and provides an excellent casting and paddling position. Here are some pictures using my Ultimate 12 in the Potomac River in both Western and Central Maryland. Also of my son in the yellow one. Bought one then found out we needed two! My wife uses it also though she doesn't fish (but I still love her!). JC

They will set you up for a test paddle on Saturdays. Also, you are more than welcome to borrow my little Phoenix 120 if you want to try it out. Although it's lighter than the Ultimate, it doesn't have as much cockpit room. A solo canoe wouldn't be a bad choice around here either. The water is getting a little warmer in KC... Tom
