Montague Glass Rod |

Anyone know anything about Montague fiberglass rods? I know they were probably one of the largest bamboo producers back then - does anyone own one of their
glass rods. Any information would be greatly appreciated. (just took a chance and bought a 9' 3pc on ebay).
Thank you, Lou

Caddis4, I don't have much comprehensive knowledge of Montague 'glass, but I hope you enjoy that one as much as I did mine. I bought it at a Two Guys
discount store about 1960 after checking out I don't know how many inexpensive rods. The weave was slightly visible through the orangy-brown finish. It had
a simple reel seat, stripper guide, and five or six snake guides. Reddish wraps with some silver foil underwarp, but quite conservative compared with a lot of
the gaudy fiberglass of the time. Two piece, 8' overall with plain metal ferrules, and a whitish plastic winding check. That rod cast a seven-weight line
beautifully (a "C" line back then), and was my go to knockabout for more than 40 years, especially smallmouth bass fishing, and, much later,
crappies. I replaced and added guides for better spacing at least twice. About five years ago, somebody stole it. With luck, that person is dead now since he
never rose to the reward offer I made--no questions asked--to buy a modest complete outfit for return of this sentimental favorite. It even had my name written
on it, but the lowlife still took it. Hopefully his backcast hit the powerline near the bridge where he was probably fishing when he swiped it, and he has been
twitching on the wire ever since. Anyway, looking it over time after time, year after year, I always thought it was a pretty good rod compared, even, with more
modern 'glass products. I continued to enjoy it even after having much more experience with a variety of rods. I rarely used another 7 weight in preference
to that one. The fittings were cheap but I took care of that on rebuilds, and the blank itself seemed good quality in a nice moderate action. Fortunately, I
still have the Pflueger reel I bought for it before a trip to Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Park. Here is a photo of a photo that shows the
rod, but not the guy who stole it.

I think that said a great deal about the rod and Whrlpool. I'd think both are worth knowing.

have one that requires rebuilding. I got it in a junk store and I prefer to think that I rescued it, rather like pulling an old pickup truck out of the woods
and reverently storing it in the garage where it belongs.

Monty made some really decent rods back in the bamboo era, they once partnered with Orvis to produce a joint venture rod right after WWII. Some of their early
glass featured blanks from a several different makers until they could roll their own. Monty like H I had alot of different qualities in their rod line. If you
know the exact model and have good pictures, there is a fellow Ive been in contact with over on Clarks that is writting a book about Monty's and has a
wealth of information, he may be able to help you.

Whirlpool, I know all too well the value of sentiment. Enjoyed reading your story...and especially the vintage photo. Lou

Got the rod today. It's in mint condition. Doesn't appear to have ever been fished. The tube has a few wear signs...probably from being moved around
over the years. Both tips seem to have a lot of flex. I'll probably line it with a 6wt and see where to go from there.

Hey Lou,
You got a really sweet rod in my opinion. I was watching that and had to really restrain myself not to bid. But really, Montague rods are no good... anyone who has one can mail it to me and I'll dispose of it properly. Haha. -Rob |
