Where can I find a pawl for my Holmes reel? |

Does anyone know where I could find a new pawl for my Holmes reel? The pawl that came with the reel is still functional, but
is pretty worn and will need to be replaced soon. Any help would be appreciated!

you're not going to find one off anybody's shelf.
I fabricated two pawls this morning for a Heddon Imperial, by milling down two recent production or readily available pawls to thickness. One is a Young pawl and the second is an Olympic pawl. I picked these two, because they are about the right length, and they snugly fit onto the shank of 3/32" drill bit, as does the original (worn) Heddon pawl. Here is the Holmes pawl
my point is I am only going to use one of the two pawls I fabricated this morning. The second one may help you out, but before we start, I need to know the shank diameter of the screw that holds your pawl in place. If you don't have calipers to measure it with, compare it to diameters of drill bits.

Thanks for the response! I will check the diameter of the screw shank when I get home this evening and either post it here or send you a private message. --Jeff |

And as long as you're taking measurements, get the thickness of the pawl, as well.

The Young pawl I milled down worked great on the Heddon Imperial, and the Olympic wasn't long enough.
The Olympic pawl has a little taller head than the Young, anyway, so I think it may be the one for you. We need to figure out if it will fit over the screw.

Bulldog--
The shank diameter of the screw that holds the pawl in place is 0.150". The thickness of the pawl is .095". What do you think? Thanks, Jeff |

that is a Big pawl spindle - 0.094" is the diameter of a pawl spindle on Young and Hardy.
Too many variables at this point (including the length of the pawl) to try to fabricate something from here. With the reel in hand, I might be able to come up with something. I believe my starting point, though would be to try getting a pawl for the original Adams reel from Gary Lacy.
