Also, what age did you start your kids casting a fly rod?
Thanks for the advice.

So it looks like my daughters will be getting a 6'6" Eagle Claw as her first rod, but what reel to balance it? It has to be cheap and tough. Martin?
Medalist?

PeteStiles...I started with a Martin Model 63...and my daughter (3 1/2 years old) will started with a Model 60...and my son (arriving in May) will start with a
Model 63 as well. You just can't beat the Model 60, 61, 62, or 63 as a starter reel.
Can't beat the price and they are always on ebay. Hold out for a boxed/minty one!

Can't go wrong with the Martin or a Pflueger 1494. I started my daughter casting in the yard at six. |

Hay Cameron - Thats great. I have two daughters, 3 1/2 and the youngest just turned 1. The older keeps asking to go fishing so I need something she can beat
the bushes with!

I had my first son doing a little casting from around 3 - it was really just playing, but planted the seed.
When he was about 8 he had a couple lessons with a friend who teaches casting, the idea being the boy might pay more attention if the info was coming from someone other then me. it turned out to be a good plan and really helped him get interested in how casting works. With the rod & reel I've gone for the smallest grips and lightest set-up I could find in 2 & 3 weights. |

I built a pair of 4 pc 4wt rods for my kids when they were around 9 or 10 and turned the grips a little smaller to fit their hands. For reels I picked up a
pair of Daiwa Lochmor standard arbor spring & pawl reels (one S100 and the other a S200) for about $20 each. Great reel for the price, though somewhat
hard to find. I ordered mine through a flyshop in Canada, Green Highlander I believe.
Good Luck

I started both my sons on a 9 foot Phillipson 6 wt, very slow, very forgiving, and put them on bream beds. Little people and little rods don't necessarily
fit...the kids need the lift of the long rod. Never miss the chance, tho, to get a new rig you want and run it past the wife as "for the kid."

I have a Martin MC34 for my son's 6'6" Eagle Claw and it it just right. Nice little dual click pawl and balances well. I think I paid less than
$25 for it new last year.

I started my son our on a 7'6'' 5wt when he was about 9. When we go fishing together he really enjoys it. His school schedule and my work
schedule don't always mesh well. We do a bit of pond fishing near the house and try to get to the coast once in the summer.
The problem is, he has a really nice cast. He picks up a fly rod 3-4 times a year and throws these nice tight loops. I fish at least once a week and am all over the place. I taught him everything he knows. I just wish I knew what I taught him. |
