Again...our "Wanted" forum works! Rockthief sent this to me last week...and it is a BIG WHEEL! I was surprised at the capacity and that the reel
has a metal handle. Not plastic. Very cool.
Thanks again Rockthief! |

Good, Cameron and Rochthief. The smaller 70 or its MG variant has more capacity than I ever need; in fact, I made a cork arbor for mine and still have about
150 yards 18 lb. IFGA greenspot dacron and a WF 7 on it. So if you don't get carpal tunnel winding backing on to that, I hope you do get a good spin out of
it on a fish that all-but spools you. Maybe that's where the handle comes in. That same long, finger-paneled handle came on some of the trout-sized
MZ/Strata reels, although it's plastic. I like the standard Martin handle better in a trout reel, but on a big winch it makes sense about the time
you've got a couple hundred yards to crank in. Looks like it also has the slightly improved clicker, the one-way clutch and spool gear being the same as on
the other disc-drag Martins. That is one sturdy machine. Cameron, you probably know this, but just in case: It's a good habit on any reel of this
construction to check the tightness of the pillar screws. These are good quality machine screws threaded into strong pillars. They don't need to be
slot-mangling tight, but they should be uniformly snug. They can be set with loctite or just nailpolish or rubber cement--they don't need to be literally
locked, but any of this stuff adds a little resistance to backing out. I suppose it also adds a bit of seal against corrosion. I usually go around the
reel--using a good-fitting screwdriver--alternately snugging the screws in stages, kind of like what you do in tightening an intake manifold or valve cover.

Well done!
Mine came with the spool labeled for Mastery Series WF-9-F Bonefish and with backing that's like, well, a rope, basically. Ditto cofisher's comment on the MG-8 thread, your photos are looking good.

I just ordered an ECHO Dec Hogan 13'3" eight weight two hander rod this afternoon and was going through my reels to find one that might work. The
MG-9 weighs out at 10.0 ounces empty...so this one might work! Saluda River striper beware!

Yes, that is a fine reel and although it is heavy, on the right rod you will not notice the heft. I like the metal knob as well and the fact that it is purple
is a nice touch. Cameron it will be a pleasure to see this reel on your new big rod.

Paul...the two hander is scheduled to arrive this coming Friday. I'll put it all together over the weekend. I can't wait!

NEW TOY! | ||

Well...my new toy arrived a day early. It is a ECHO Dec Hogan 13'3" eight weight two hander. I put it together and it was a little daunting after
not fishing anything longer than eight feet long for the past four or so years!
Time to load up the reel and see how it works. |

Last night I spent the evening going through and organizing all my gear along with photographing a few reels as well. The MG-9 got loaded up with backing,
Airflo running line, and a Airflo 600 grain Skagit head. I need to weigh the reel again but it certainly has some heft to it.
Hadley had a good time too ripping line off and reeling it back in.
Hopefully I'll be chasing striper on the river within the next couple of weeks! |

that's just nice. This looks like a fly reel and not some hubcap like all these other saltwater reels. You might have sold me on these instead of my teton
tioga. Just looks too good.

Cameron,
I was wondering how you were doing with the Spey rod. Your rig looks great. I was wondering about the MG9, looks like a great fit. I also like your choice of lines, very similar to what I'm using on my DECHO. Is the belly line a one of the newer Compact Skagits or a NW Skagit head? The real adventure is about to begin, Spey casting is a different animal, enjoy! Respectfully rvreclus |

tobewan77...I'm really glad that the MG-9 is going to work out since a new reel isn't really in the budget right now. I think it looks really
excellent too.
rvreclus...I've got an Airflo running line followed by a 600 grain Skagit head. I'm excited to give it a go on the river. |
