Orvis Golden Eagle: Correct rod bag? |
Lead | |
|
I have an Orvis Golden Eagle 7'6" 6 wt 2 pc and am wondering if the included rod bag is the original bag. The seller had said it was original.
It's green without any Orvis labels/marking. Can anyone confirm? |

I have handled a few Orvis golden eagle glass rod bags and the Orvis name was not on them. I remember the bags as tan with a hanging tag. My 2 cents. Hope
that helps.

This one is primary green with a black hang tag. And now that I look at it more carefully, it's the rod bag has 3 compartments, except that it's a 2 pc
rod. I'm guessing it's not original now. Can anyone confirm?

As far as I know, Orvis did not offer the GE with two tips. And they are always very exact with their top stuff, the bag would correspond to a 2 piece - and
that rod is top stuff-enjoy...

My GE has a tan bag with hang tag, two piece rod with a double slotted bag, orvis tube.

i've owned a few orvis g.e.'s. and couple had the green bag with three slots. i believe orvis used the same bags with the golden eagles as they did
with their bamboo rods of the same era, as the bamboo rod bags were the same. so, i would tend to believe your rod bag is original.

I have the same rod purchased in 1975 and it came with a 3 compartment green bag.

I spoke with the seller today, and he was the original purchaser back in the 70s. Based on your experiences as well, I'm confident it's original as
well. Thanks, all!
I'll post some pics of it soon. This is my first Phillipson Epoxite-based rod; I can see now what all the fuss is all about! This one feels like a sweetheart! |

It is a sweetheart - enjoy - beautiful production work, no doubt...

Anyone know why Orvis named this rod series "Golden Eagle?"

To quote the Orvis catalog: "The special glass is a distinctive green-gold color, known in Colonial days as Golden Eagle." I have no idea if that
is true or not, but the name Golden Eagle sure makes for good ad copy.

Ah, this'll teach me to work from memory after all these years... just received my G.E. back from Orvis and reapir shop - they are magnificent. And, of
course. I stand corrected again... the bag is tan with a tag, AND 3 compartments...

My Orvis Full Flex As have tan bags with hang tags and 2 compartments w/o Orvis labelling.
When it stops snowing here in Colorado, I'll plan to take the Golden Eagle! |

After reading I checked my 8 1/2 ft Orvis Golden Eagle. It has two slots for two piece. Important question the rod tube cap was also green plastic. I lost the
cap years ago. How does a person get a replacement cap for the tube. Thanks

I have a number of Orvis bamboos in the "Madison" (single tip) grade, several of which came new in three-compartment bags. The idea was that if you
ordered an extra tip at some point, you'd have a slot for it. My two-piece, two-tip bamboo rods become single-tippers every time I fish them, as I always
leave one tip at home. I don't like worrying about whether they're too hot, too cold, too something. And, if I were ever to break a tip on a good rod
I'd be in no mood to continue fishing, so an extra would be of no use to me. Glass rods are usually single-tipped, so they fit into that idiosyncrasy just
fine. Just one more reason for me to love 'em.

I once had a very early 8ft Trout graphite 3pc that came with a four section tan sack, unmarked. They were still using sacks made for bamboo rods at the time
and the 8ft, 3pc Battenkill had two tips, of course. The other thing is that I've seen a few Orvis sacks from the 1970's and 1980's that were a
light olive color.
