Guide Posts: 218 (03/23/09 10:18:00) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I have bunch of the Hardy Marquis Multipliers and bunch of the spare spools. I'm thinking about painting couple of the spare spools that have worst edge wear. I would only be painting areas on outside of reel and nothing that would be in touch with other moving parts of the reel other then the multiplier unit. I was wondering if anyone has tried that on these reels and if so how it came out. If not is there any suggestions on type of primers or paints to use on the spools? Any info appreciated. Barry

However, primers never hurt. I also like lacquers to get a translucent coating. On the other hand, the common spray enamels seem to be a little too soft to my tastes although I guess they get the job done. Cleanliness is key. I like to strip off the old paint and make sure the bare metal is clean. Can't be too clean - old reels have a lot of oil everywhere that can affect adhesion. Follow the stripper directions exactly, including all the washing and neutralization steps. Mask all the parts that don't need to be painted and build up in thin, even coats. Search painting for this section. Painting reels has been discussed before.

Master Guide Posts: 768 (03/24/09 15:13:33) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	It's hard to painted vented spools for a decent result; the edges of the vents will lose definition, or paint will flow to the inside. Let it dry a long time, hard, or you'll have remnant paint drips transferred to your fly line.

Preparation is the key. A clean, properly prepared surface is required for a good result. 2. Plenty of thin even coats are better than a few thick coats. 3. Buy good paint - being cheap will get you in the end. Once you get over the hurdle of whether or not to paint a reel, you can then let your imagination run free. Match the wraps on your rod, use your team or school colors, etc. I have been wantingto try hammered look paint for a reel, but haven't done it yet. Anyone tried the hammered paint?
