I want to outfit my vintage Eagle Claw Featherlight 3.0oz, 6'6", 2/1, 5wt; with a vintage "EC" model Eagle claw reel. The aesthetics would be perfect. And although new to reels of Hardy-ish design, I really like them. (I've got a Diawa 730 and a System 1 456 in my arsenal now....) The EC-10 is 2 7/8", the EC-11 is 3 1/8". I think the smaller of the 2 would be better for weight balance, but can it handle a full-length (90ft.) DT5F line? Room for backing? I saw a photo of the papers for this series of reels in this forum somewhere, and it lists the capacity of the EC-10 as "5WT"; but wanted to verify it means DT5F and not WF5F... Do you happen to know the approx. weight of the 11? I'm just concerned that it'll be a bit too heavy for what I want it for.... Of course, a Pflueger Medalist 1492 weighs about the same. the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

If I had multiple DT5F's to play with, I might consider it. But I use my 5wt 'Peach' on a majority of my rods... (and I need more than 45' on my 8-footers...) Do you need to cast more than 30'? the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Master Guide Posts: 2130 (03/13/09 00:08:52) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I agree, the beauty of a DT is that you can roll cast short distances with precision, and at least my short rods are dedicated to times when I have to work in under a tree cover along sheltered river areas when winds pickup, so Im not casting over 40ft and most off far closer, actually sight casting to fish I can see clearly. You should be able to convert a DT to two lines, one being easily able to be loaded with a 12-15# backing on your EC10 or similiar. Richard

For an all around light trout reel, you'd want the EC 11. That particular rod is handy, but not especially light or delicate. In the graphite era, folks started going to the smallest, lightest reel that would hold enough line, but with fiberglass, mid-diameter and mid-weight trout reels in the range of the EC 11 and EC 12 were more or less the norm. You'd lose some versatility on multiple rods with the EC 10; the EC 11 will be at home on more rods, including the one you're planning it for. If anything, even it is on the small side because of the narrow spool. I'm not much of a short rod fan, but in the '70s I sometimes used a 6' Fenwick for 6 with a Pflueger 1494 and that combo was fine. I used my EC 11 with a 5-weight line and various 7 1/2' rods. I don't remember now, but I think I had a WF rather than DT just so as to have a little more backing. I prefer DT lines, but the preference isn't very significant, and when I have a more or less multiple purpose rig, as is the nature of that rod, that's when I set up with WF.
