The only shorter pack rod I have is an Orvis Fullflex, 7 footer, 4 piece glass. It's a fully loading and easy casting rod, even tho it's made in the
fly/spin configuration. I can use a 5 or 6 on it, but usually fish it with a 6 weight. It'll throw a half ounce jig a mile with a spinning reel on it.

My 6'6" Lami 6 pc is a faster rod than my 6 pc 7 1/2 ft 4 wt. The shorter one is labeled as a 3 wt but I use the 4 wt line to slow it down a bit.

I have a 6 piece 7' Lami -- Built by Dave Lewis/Performance fly rods. The blank is listed as a 3 weight, but Dave lists it as a 3/4. I prefer it with a 4
weight. Smooth and still has a little oomph. I had a 6 piece 7'6" and it was a noodle with a 4 wt, but the 7' 6 piece is wonderful. I also built
one this past winter, and can't wait to try it this Spring. Also have a 5 piece 8' Steffen 3/4 that is a great rod as well it is almost airy to cast,
though a little longer than you mentioned. I wouldn't shy away from the Lami's. Steve

I'll add my vote for the Berkley Buccaneer 7'5wt 5pc. Not real pretty, (which fits my tastes), but really does the job, a real workman-like rod for me.
I just lawn cast my Fenwick 605 yesterday and that is one sweet rod, too, but, alas, not so much a pack rod. FR |
