Another Dutch on Hardy/Scepter |
Lead | |
|
I see there is another Dutch auction for some more Hardy/Sceptre blanks on that online auction site. Anyone here going to go at them this time? I'm going
to pass but I love my 9', very versatile rod.

My 9 ft blank from the seller has a Fibatube label. It just a plastic stick on, not intended to be permanent.
If I recall Andy's description of the process, these were built as Scepters for Anglers Mail in a cloned Fisher factory built for Hardy in England or something like that. Some were labeled for Constable I believe, and other blanks may have been used by well known but unamed makers. Love my 7' built by Old Yankee Rodsmiths. Had it out this morning, until the wind shut everything down. Hayden

I haven't used mine much...I use the 9 footer in the salt with an intermediate cortland wf salt water taper. It nicely handles an 8, 9 or 10wt line. Lots of power to cut through the ocean wind. (haven't built my 8 1/2 ft yet). Lou |

I went back and read that mess of a discussion that ensued when the first batch of Sceptre blanks became available... The way I think it works is if there is say 10 rods available, the ten highest bidders get a rod...unless one or more of the bidders bids on more than one rod...in which case, low bidders get bumped. So, if I am the high bidder for 9 rods, only the next highest bidder gets the tenth rod and I get nine rods. Lou |

If there are 10 blanks available, the highest 10 bidders win the auction. They all pay the lowest of the 10 bids for each of the blanks. For example,
Bidder A offers $20, Bidder B $18, and so forth until Bidder J has offered $9 (the tenth highest bid), and Bidder K offers $8.50. Bidders A through J get
their blanks at $9.00 each and Bidder K gets none.

Never mind the snipe software...my brain doesen't work with Dutch Auctions either!
caddis4, I too have one of Andys Sceptres...amazing rods. I found a 3 wt a little light in a slight breeze. The 4 wt (DT) was very nice at turning over dries, but started to lose it's punch with a Wolly Bugger or heavy nymph. I found a DT 5 wt perfect. It was great in a pretty stiff breeze turning over smaller dries and even jumbo sized Hex's. It was no problem with streamers and poppers as well. It was great short and long. A 6 worked ok in short, but I felt a strain after about 30 feet. Chad. |

Fish my 7' Sceptre with a WF5 or a DT5. I tried the 3 but not much happened. A 4 was only fair. It also works fine with a 6 and as Hayden said, with a 7.
The 9' is a beast and one powerful rod. It is very heavy so finding a reel to balance is problematic. |

Ok, another slight veer but in topic. Those that have finished their 9 ft Sceptres, what weight of line are you using? Finished out spey, switch single?

Hayden I toss any WF8F about a mile. These rods are real catapults. Oh, I also cast with a Wulff TT89. It cast the same as the other lines.

I've fished my 9' with DT5, DT6 and WF7. I like the DT6 best. It will chuck that WF7 a good long ways. The 5 was a little underlined, but it would cast
it fine after I worked out enough line to load it up. I've lawn cast it with a WF9. It cast that alright but I think that it Would really max out with an
8.

I had mine out today on one of the Columbia basin lakes that opened March 1st. I had a full sinking 7wt and it was a delight. The first time I fished it was
with an 8wt floater and it was fine with that but I think a 6wt or 7wt will be my choice for the sinkers. It gets a little breezy on those lakes from time to
time and that 9 footer is going to be the one that gets picked first. I built it with a full wells and detachable extended butt.
I've got a couple of 81/2s that I haven't built yet. What weights are folks using on those? JJ |

I have a couple of the 9ft blanks, and taped a reel and some guides on one right when I got it ( a year ago?), seemed like an 8/9 rod to me, really would zing
a 9wt. Course all this is on grass, things might change with rod all together and on water. I plan on a permanent fighting butt, which will move the whole grip
up a few inches, basicly making the rod feel a tad bit shorter.
Now I need to find my roundtoit. Keith |

Hi All;
I bought one of the Dutch auction 9ft blanks with grip. I'm hoping it makes a nice 8wt for throwing bass bugs. Waynebh |

I got one of the 8.5' blanks with the cork grip. I'm debating whether it's worth chopping 9" off the butt and losing the cork to lessen the
power just a bit. I think it might not make much sense.

I threw a bid in on the 9ft blank without a grip thinking of having it made up for a saltwater striper rod but was beat out by a buck. Oh well didn't really need to be spending the cash anyway |

Nijinski wrote:interesting idea. I also bought one of the 8'6" with cork. If making this rod shorter would make it more of a "true 6wt.", I'd certainly be interested. Unfortunately, I don't have nearly enough rod making experience to make that judgment call...
