Steffen in Next Week... |
Lead | |
|
My new Steffen 8' 5-wt. and 7.5' 3-wt are on their merry way next week. Really looking forward to getting out and doing some test casting on a local
stream. Anyway, any happy Steffen owners out there that want to share their experiences with their rods? ~S

BD-
Interestingly enough, I just ordered those exact 2 blanks from Mark two days ago.. hopefully they'll be here in the next month or so... I'd love to hear your impressions when they arrive. I have a 8' 3/4 (which is def. a 4 IMHO) which I really like but I haven't fished it nearly enough.. I'm hoping this spring to really put it through its paces... -matt |

I have a 7.5 footer. This has become my primary trout rod. Great in close and can push some longer casts if need be.

I'm building a Steffen 8'6" 5/6wt for myself that I hope to finish this weekend and fish as soon as the weather warms up a bit. It definitely
passed the wiggle test and balances perfectly with an Abel TR2. Soon to follow is a 8'5wt Steffen and a couple of 7'9" 3/4 wts that I've been
asked to build. The Fed EX guy dropped off the 8'5wt today and it's every bit as beautifully made as the 8'6"; totally straight blank that
feels great in the hand. Mark Steffen does a excellent job rolling his blanks.

Yea, I've heard nothing but amazing things about his rods...I'm wondering how they are going to balance with my Ross Cimarron...? HouzeHead, that's
a great looking rod and a beautiful fish!

BD, I own the 7'9" 3/4 and the 7'6" 2/3. I wasn't totally sold on the 7'6" 2/3 my first season with it, as I fished it with an
Airflo Delta Taper 2/3 (felt sluggish). I then tried it with a WF3 and that was fairly good. It didn't become a rod I won't part with until I paired it
with a DT2. Very sweet. I like the 7'9" with both a longbelly WF4 and love how it fishes a DT3. What hardware did you order and how many pieces? Mark
does nice clean work and his blanks are super. Hope you like the rods.

BD you're gonna love that 8' 5/6 it's one of my favorite rods. I'm thinking of ordering an 8' 4/5, 3 or 4 pc. Has anyone tried a 4/5?

scud dog -
I'm thinking of fishing the 7'6" with a WF3 Rio Classic line (one of my favorite lines...very supple or has been in my experience). I ordered the upgraded hardware on both...figured if I was ordering custom I mine as well do it up right. Both rods are 3 piece configurations :-) ~BD |

Does Steffan do a 7'6", 4 weight? I remember looking at his website and only seeing a limited offering that didn't include that length. I'm
seeing all this variety of length and line weight mentioned in this thread and I'm considering contacting him.

Another question for you lucky Steffen owners: is there a substantial difference in action between two-piece and multi-piece rods of the same length/line
weight? If the 8' 3/4 that everybody loves in a 3-piece would be as sweet with a couple of extra ferrules, I have some brookie streams I'd like to
introduce it to...

Canewrap;
Mark hasn't updated his site in quite some time. I remember the 7'6' 3/4 being listed. He also builds a lot of 7'9" 3/4s (which aren't listed). Another popular rod that's not listed are his 5/6wts. I'd say calling Mark is a good idea. Great guy.

Kinzua,
A few years back, Mark discussed having built and fished an 8' #3 with me. Truth is I shouldn't speak for Mark, but it wasn't something he recommended. At the time he suggested I get the 7'6" 2/3 or the 8'0' 3/4 to fish with a DT3. I got the 7'6" 2/3 and fish it with a DT2. It's turned out to be one of my favorite rods. I've had the 7'9" 3/4 for some time and decided to try it with a DT3 a couple years back. Good pairing. I now like it better with a DT3 than the WF4 I had been using. I told a freind of mine about the DT3 and he's been fishing his 8' 3/4 with one too. Taste vary but IMO Marks rods fish better with the lighter line recommendation. There's a good number of people that have voiced the same opinion. |

Steffen 9 wt | ||
|
Mark made me an 8 foot, 9 weight, 5 piece this past fall. I had some fun with it down in Florida a week or two ago. Just baby tarpon, but on a glass rod,
with a little more feel, it was alot of fun.
The Sheepshead was on some back-up spin tackle but was good eatin'.
I love the 9 wt. It has some backbone but still retains a good amount of feel. It handled a fair amount of wind as well. I also love my 8 foot 3/4 weight
(a 4 wt IMHO), also a 5 piece. I had one, sold it and had to get another. A great rod.

What do you guys think of a Steffen 7 weight, say an 8 or 8 1/2 footer? I have been thinking about such a rod, in 4 piece, for light saltwater fishing. I might
just order a blank. Anyone have such a Steffen rod? How do you like it? Can it handle weighted flies and wind well? I have an SA System 7 rod that I like to
use in saltwater, but it's only a two piece. This might be a good excuse to order a multi-piece blank to build up.

Both Steffen's came in today (8' 5/6 weight and 7'6" 2/3 weight) - I'm nearly speechless. Beautiful work and great feel in my hand...now I
just need for some of the anchor ice to melt away... I'll try to get some pictures up soon. ~S

S,
Check out this Rod Pictures post for some directions for posting photos. If you don't have one, I recommend getting a PhotoBucket account. It is the best spot for storing your online photos because you can use them anywhere you wish.PhotoBucket. You can link your Yuku profile to your PhotoBucket account and photo posting is almost simple. I would also love to see photos of your Steffens. I'm sure Mike and I aren't the only ones. Tom |

Yes you can link to the Yuku pictures. Make sure you click the "Add Reply" button so you can use the full editor window (don't use the Quick
Reply box). There is a yellow smiley icon at the top of the editor window. The Yuku album icon is the second to the left of the smiley - it looks like a moon
over some mountains in a square frame.
