No question, a Medalist 1494-AK is the best reel you can buy for under $25.

I have purchased used JS Sharpes reels in the classified section for less than $50. IMHO very nice reels if you are in the market for a click pawl reel.

Some of you may not know of http://gofishin.com . They have lots of new items at a discount, including reels. For you
Medalist fans, they have the South Bend "Finalist" 1141. It's a Medalist look-a-like sale priced at $11.99.

I have new (Chinese) and old (USA) medalists and haven't noted much difference.
The Daiwa Lochmor Series reels have a drag identical to the SF 706/708 series reels with a more lightly built frame and an anodized (?) textured finish. I've only one and that one only briefly, so I can't report on how it deals with torque. Seems as good as my other Daiwa's, which are quite nice. They can be had for less than $25.00 quite often.

My Chinese and Japanese Medalists work great and have held up. I really like the marbled look of the spool caps of the older made in USA models. I have some
of both, and fish both.

Whoever coined and put into widespread use the marketing term "entry-level" for leisure products really earned a paycheck. It purports to direct
attention to affordable items for dabbling, but its more powerful subliminal purpose is to direct people away from them. Thus, dilletantes who don't want
to be viewed as neophytes avoid these products and instead buy the more expensive stuff, which is often no better in any significant way except for the
perceived status it conveys. But you can tell somebody who's been worked over at the fly shop because they have started with the "step up"
equipment, let's say a $50 to $100 reel instead of one for less. The Pflueger, an enduring, proven, durable design, predates and defies this marketing
redirect and is still among the best values in fly reels as pointed out above. Pfueger managed the same with its machined Supreme reels and its Summit large
arbor. Chinese-made or lightly used USA-made, four or five Pfluegers for a total of $100-$125 would give many fly anglers, beginners or not, far more fit fly
tackle than one nondescript, come-and-go reel in the $60-100 range.
I like the mention of the Daiwa Lochmoor, also. They are cast, bucking the machined trend, and I wonder if they didn't sell well, since they seem to be cheaper these days than a few years ago. Never seen one first-hand to check out but I thought I recognized the well done click drag of previous Daiwas. I've had a large arbor click drag Lochmoor on my watch list quite a while but haven't pulled the trigger; it intrigues me partly because most LA reels have a so-so disc drag and I like adjustable clicks better. Here's one in conventional spool: http://cgi.ebay.com/DAIWA-LOCHMOR-FLY-REEL-LOCHMOOR-S-300-NEW-FOR-7-8-9-WT_W0QQitemZ310075345483QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0

Shop near here has the Lochmoor 300 in what looks to be a good size for a #6/7/8. It's has a solid click-pawl (no pen springs like a Martin) ; a nice tight
spool (unlike most Martins) and unlike all them Martin reels some of you like...the Lochmoors all have STRAIGHT spool handles!

I had a Lochmoor and was impressed with the workmanship and the drag. I only bought it to check it out and then I sold it. Heck, I got if for twenty bucks and
that was a great deal I believe. I just gave away a Newtrad F3 that is also a great deal on a reel. Again, well made with a decent click drag. It was a 7/8 and
balanced fine on a 5 wt rod. These are good deals for the frugal fisher.

For the money you can't beat an English made Orvis Battenkill. I prefer the click and pawl, but the disc drag isn't bad either.

but any way you look at it, it is still not a $50 reel

Well in my mind the English Made late 80s to early 90s Battenkills could still be had for $50.....but in looking at the completed auctions it looks like
only a couple could be had for under $50, and that most are over that and closer to $75 as an average........I guess Gone Are The Days |

Yes, a good candidate reel. I'd look at this way. It IS a $50 reel, but it sells for more than that because it says "Orvis" on it. Comparable
models with a different badge or the maker's name are more likely to be available in the stated price range. I think they would have to be the BFR made
reels, though. The better ones from JW Young are probably still out of the stated price bracket.

The best reel for under $50?
My mint 1937 Ogden Smiths Exdchequer.
I upgraded a series of Valdex reels, starting with a $50 buy on ebay and continued to sell each reel for what I paid for the next one. After about the fifth Valdex, I ended up with a mint-in-box reel, which I traded for the Exchequer. Undoubtedly, the best buy in a $50 reel.

Ok Ron, I will give you $60 for your $50 Exchequer. Come on man, that is a deal in the midst of a recession!

I was going to offer $60 plus postage but it's only fair that the first offer stands. Maybe the moderator will want to establish another
discussion--"best deal I ever got on a reel"--if more folks would want to post another five pages on that. The recent Ross post would fit. I once got
a Hardy Princess for a touch under $50, but I did sell it almost immediately for, well, more than that.
Edit: Seriously, Ron, I was thinking folks might like a new my-best-buy-ever discussion since this one was getting pretty long and replies along that line would be slightly different. Personally I love looking at that reel in any discussion, and know it's not for sale at that price, or probably any.

Just got the lamiglass stillwater 3/4... what a perfect click pawl reel.
perfect bias.. nice sound - lovely anodized finish - mine is dark green. I got the reel and an extra spool for 28 bucks (one with 3wt line and one with 4wt)... If I had a Reddington C/T I would argu that the lami. reel is very competitive... I can post pictures if requested. |

Me too. I think the Lami reel was the same as the Cortland Climax, Epic, and maybe the Bean's Streamlight, but not sure. If it's of that type--and
green besides--it's certainly a good reel for the price.
