LRH or Featherweight? |
Lead | |
|
I just (today) put down a deposit on a McFarland 8' 5wt and I'm already dreaming up a match. I'm pretty sure that Harris Sportsmail is getting my
hard earned dollars for either the Hardy LRH or Featherweight - but which one? Or perhaps someone will suggest something completely different. Suggestions
anyone?

You can get a DT5 on an LRH, and you can just barely fit a DT4 with a base wrap on a Featherweight.
My vote would be for the LRH. I loaded mine with a WF6 and 50 yds backing to balance a 3-oz. rod.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

I'd go with the LRH too. I have a scan of an old catalogue page advertising their 7 1/2 ft, 5 wt Glaskona, and they paired it with an LRH. Great reel.

Definitely the LRH ... that is what is going on my McFarland 7'9" 5wt when it is ready
.... the Hardy "Featherweight" is perfect on my McFarland 7' 3 piece 4wt but would be too small for the 5wt. Ken |

Featherweight to light for this rod. Marquis or System reel would be nice.

Pete, I have the same rod and I am waiting to upgrade to a Hardy LRH, and am looking for good used one(Anybody have one to sell?), but currently it is a
perfect match with an Orvis BBSII reel and their Superfine Wonderline, in fact Mike Mcfarland test casted his this combo last July and felt it was a good
balance. It has been my opinion(worth about 2 cents or so) that Mike's rods are pretty flexible with alot of reels and line choices.

Pete, it all depends on whether or not you subscribe to the "lightest reel possible" theory. I used to, but have been converted. I agree with
Bulldog, the Featherweight is too light and won't hold enough backing. I'll be using my LRH and a double taper line on my new McFarland 8' 5WT
when I take delivery.

I'm waiting on an 8'#5 from Mike as well. I plan on using the LRH or the heavier Abel X-stream (TR2). I'm fortunate to have a couple reels to
choose from. I'll use the reel that balances best. The Hardys from Harris are a good value and the TR2 can be found on Ebay in that same price range. If I
was limited to having one reel, I'd pick the Able.

I'm not a "lightest reel possible" type. I want some backing on the reel, dammit!
BTW - What does LRH stand for? |

Lawrence Robert Hardy if I remember correctly.

That's LRH in the middle, behind me, at the Hardy museum.

Scud, I'd go with the Made in the USA Abel TR-2 also if I had to choose between it and the "new" Hardy LRH. Abel make a great reel. I guess
I'm too old to understand a Chinese (or Korean?) Hardy, but I'm sure they're just fine and it's just all in my head.
BTW, sure sounds like a lot of us are waiting for a McFarland 8' 5 WT ... uh-oh.
