1. Does anyone here "skate" dries, and
2. Do you think they would work on fishies other then Steelhead?
Here's one I tied for a steelhead skater swap about a month ago...

I've skated caddis dries with great success on quite a few pieces of water. Sometimes a quick wiggle skate helps make that decision for a dry fly take.

Same here with caddis.

Early this spring I run into the hatch of small brown stoneflies. The fish would smash skated flies, tied with the palmered hackle.
![]() Skating (or "sudden inch") is my standard hopper technique, too. Caddis, spent female mayfly spinners, the list goes on... |

now when I refer to "skating dries" I mean that as you swing through your target area your fly is leaving a "V" wake behind it. To do this you must mend to keep the speed somewhat slow and constant...

Hit the Arkansas river in Colorado last year after the annual mothers day caddis hatch blizzard. Very few bugs and only saw three risers in three days. Rigged a caddis with a beadhead dropper. The dropper keeps the caddis skipping close to the water. I attempt to cause it to actively skip upstream vs. leaving a V wake. Targeting likely holding spots in front of and behind sunken rocks I was able to cause numerous rises with hook-ups approaching 20 fish per hour. Again there was absolutely no surface activity and the fish would not come up to a dead drift even on the dropper.
On another occasion in Rocky Mt. National Park I was guiding a couple of newbies out of a wedding group of 12 people. High cold water conditons in late May created a miserable fish day and the only fish landed were by my clients I had taught to skitter a caddis. Marshall |

Here is a photo of a pattern by R.H. Brown called the steelhead bee. It is intended to be used with something like Musclin so that the fly rides in the water not above it...

HD,
Nice work-I always loved that fly. I think that every flyfisherman should read R.H. Brown...some of the best writing in English on angling. Vlad |

I don't fish freshwater rivers that much and the ones I do are not like the western rivers. More slow moving. But I have been skating Muddlers a lot this season in stillwater with very good success.

Works well with snowshoe flies.... | ||

They tend to go under and pop right back up. The trout can't resist.

I usually fish the Araknas River caddis hatch with a black foam Elk Hair caddis and a peacock and brown dropper. I swing that rig after a twitching float, and
often get hits on the dry instead of the dropper during that swing.
Marshall, I am gonna try your rig and texhnique on the Ark...sounds like you had a great day! By the way, I am thinking about loosely organizing a Colorado glass fishing day in June at a pond near Leadville, while runoff is plaguing us. Ever fish Crystal Lake? wacokid54 |

I have gotten quite a few trout to take a skated fly. I would love to raise a Bull Trout to one. -Thom
