There's an interesting passage in the first chapter. Clemens writes, "let me simply say that with all the tremendous advances in technology and design that have occurred, modern, quality, hollow fiberglass is the best material from which to make a fishing rod."

He goes on to mention two new interesting materials, graphite and boron. Graphite was described as stiff and capable of casting tighter loops. The book was published in 1974. It must have been written right before graphite rods became affordable and widely available. You can already see the seeds of the craze for faster, stiffer rods.
