This morning HouzeHead picked me up at work (they won't miss me for a few hours...HA...) and we took off for the Saluda River. This river flows about ten minutes from my office. I've not fished the Saluda River for years for some unknown reasons. It was a very cold morning and there were even a few snowflakes falling as we drove along.
After a short hike, Corey is pointing out where the fish should be holding.
HouzeHead started the windy morning with his Fenwick two hander. This was an interesting rod to watch him cast and he was pulling out some very long casts with it.
First trout of the day fell for a white zonker tied from HouzeHead's hands.
Moments before release.
After nearly being spooled by a 16-18 rainbow trout which tossed the fly after a five minute fight...I netted my first fish of 2009!
Over the course of the next couple of hours I brought a half dozen or so trout to net. A great way to spend the morning.
Oh yeah...the guides were icing up all morning. It was cold.
HouzeHead dropped a fly in my hand before we started off from the car. I tied it on as a dropper and caught a fish on my first cast with it. I guess it does work.
The flies that got it done. Fished them deep and a lot of fun to put a bend in the Heddon #770 and hear the Condex click.
I'll be going back...it's ten minutes from work...there is a large rainbow trout that I've yet to meet.
