I got a 7'6" 5 weight bamboo for Christmas SO, I had to take it out and break it in.....but not BREAK it! Well I didn't break it, but I got wet
trying to land this ALBINO/PALOMINO. It took the Four Feather Nymph on the second cast.

Fly Goddess...someone must have been a good girl this year, eh? Who was the maker on the cane rod? That is a big, unreal looking, trout. Let's see that
fly!

The rod is just to hold me over till I get the custom built. It is a Zhu - Edwards taper and very nice.
As for the fly, it is one I sent you for the FOTW, but here it is for everyone to see. It was in the Nov. Dec. issue of Rod and Reel. Tied by Weiss:

Hi Joni, so where did you catch that big guy? be careful, bamboo is habit forming! Great looking fly, very buggy, what depth were you fishing it at? Im finding
that our water here, (river) is pretty shallow, so fishing with one of your furrled tapered sinking leaders and a short tippet is the answer with a floating
line, makes it alot easier to pickup and cast all day. Most pockets and holes along the banks are only 4-6ft deep where the trout are holding up.

Same thing, sink leader and Sharkskin. I was maybe 1 foot deep in a pool that was maybe 3' deep. It was definitely sight fishing. Need I say what happened
when I saw him suck in the fly and line go tight......OHMYGAWD,OHMYGAWD...etc.

cool fish - so odd how they lack almost any color. Do Browns develop these genetic mutations?

Hahaha, I know that feeling well, hopefully I can do exactly as you did with nobody around to see my excitement. Where did you catch it? Gotta be pretty cold
and a bit of snow on the ground now. Strawberry?

Not the Berry, Lake is frozen solid and I am not sure the river is open this time of year. No this one is a secret. I will only share over a great cup of
coffee...in person! LOL

I've rarely seen palominos that fat! That's a great way to initiate a new rod. Wow, that fish is winter pale too. You must get a lot of snow.

Hahaha, well I was born in Provo so Im a little familiar with the area, and while the coffee in Utah is not great unless made at home I can always bring some
nice unground beans for a really good cup. I miss Utah, many many memories for me, both childhood and adult. Your a lucky lady to be able to live there!
Plus Im loving your leaders, Gonna have to get with you for a whole new group for the fall bull trout clave and also for my ever developing winter ultra light fishing. Im finding in windless conditions that the sinking ferruled tapered leaders you sent me are outstanding, we need to work up some for UL around 2wt and 4ft so I can couple them with some 2ft 1# leaders better. Likewise I like the big ones. Going to the Fall Bull Trout Clave this year, so will need some 10-11 wt 7-8ft sinking leaders, looking for some big fish on this one so think at least 20# test. South Fork of the Provo below the graveyard? Richard |

LOL....okay?! or is it.............
I would love to experiment on some big gun leaders for you. Give me a shout in a pm as to what you need. I love a challenge. Oh I never posted this before, but I made leaders for a friend on another forum once. He requested some Big Guns cause he was going for Salmon. I came up with something, and in return he sent me pictures of what ended up on the end of the leader....you ready for this? This is all true and it blew me away.

Yea Ive seen em and cauught them that big, sometimes arguing with some big bears too, thats some King, betting its around 45#, about the biggest Ive seen
outside the Lower 48.
Joni the trout we are looking at are in the area of 20 pound plus, but im counting on alot of leader and playing so a good solid sinking at least 20# would be perfect, I will message you with what I have in mind. Well there are some creeks just north of you controled by the Indians that are looking good too? Richard |

Fly Goddess - What a beaut! Thanks for the pic.
A couple of years ago I saw a similar fish in Beaver Creek in western MD. Not quite as fat though. At least three different guys fished the large hole that it lived in, including myself. Sight fishing like you. None of us caught it. It was like a target in that pool. It held right in the middle about six feet down. I can still remember that fish. |

Joni lives in gods country, Ive fished it as a child sense the late 1940s, it was my childhood stomping ground before people moved to Utah. Granny had a place
on 3rd south in Prove with the river running though it in the back yard. Up river my Uncle had a Ranch and a brother of my Granny had a cherry Orchard way up
the canyon, deer hunting and fishing was my lifesblood for my youth.
While we never had Salmon like the coastal states, we always had great fishing, hunting and with the schools breaking for deer season some fantastic life memory camps. Back in the 50s it was a true family reunion and deer/fishing camp, something I fear will never be repeated or known today by our grandchildren. Ricahrd |
