For me, casting heavier rods that are not balanced is not really enjoyable. Casting a heavy rod that is balanced seems to make a world of difference, since the casting motion itself, even with the extra weight, is much easier with a balanced rod. When I say a balanced rod, for me this means having the balance point just below the point where my thumb contacts the top of the grip; from the underside it would be at the point between my index and middle fingers.
I know that many rod and reel combination set-ups are fished without being balanced; that's just the way that they are and they fish just fine. But, for me, I would like to have all of my rod and reel set-ups balanced, so I'd like to ask the board if there are ways to do this; to get this balance point that I'm looking for.
I've looked into lead-cored trolling lines as a means to achieve this; using 10-20 yards of this type of line as partial backing material; fashioned as a "backing-lead core line-backing-fly line" sandwich construct. In some cases, it works, in others I still need more weight in the reel seat area of the rod.
Any other suggestions?
