Need a very light reel for a 6'6" 2wt (graphite) rod I'm building either one of these will do.
PM if you have one you want to get rid of. Thanks, Brian |

Brian, any idea how much the finished rod will weigh? I have a couple reels that could work. Pls ignore this if you only want the three reels you mentioned.
Two weight - you are going to have fun, building then fishing. My Sage one weight is a dream to fish. I have three reels for it. Who me?

Paul not yet I'm still working on it. The blank weight withouht hardware is .83oz. I'm trying to keep it as light as I can. Can't wait to fish it
but might have to wait until the snow leaves. Finding a reel has been a little bit of a challenge. I'm open to suggestions reel wise. These three are just
three that keep popping up as ones that would work.

YEs, it is a challenge because you can't go buy reels all over the place. I shall play with my one weight tonight, see what it weighs. It is 8'1"
which is much longer than your rod, but I will explore any reason to play with rods and reels. I also have a 5' graphite. I wonder what it weighs? Thanks
for a great reason to play!

Janus,
If you would consider a more modern look, how about the BassPro White River UltraLight? I bought one off eBay and liked it so much I purchased a second one from BassPro. It is a click pawl reel that does weigh 2.2 oz without a line (I checked it). They come in black and a pewter/gold color they call smoke. The smoke color looks great on a wood insert reelseat with bright hardware. I lined one with a WF3 line and a few yards of backing for my Lami 7 foot, 3 weight (pic below). The Lami is a very light build and for me the combination balances just right. I like my reels on the light side with the balance point near the very front of the rod grip. The Airex reel has a very classic look and weighs 4 oz, so the balance point would be a little further back. The Martin is right in between at about 3ΒΌ oz. I've never handled a Ryobi. If you go with the Martin, they hold a LOT of line. With a 2 weight line, you will have a couple of ounces of backing before the spool is filled. I had a similar issue with some old Pflueger Trump reels, so I fitted a cork arbor on them. The result was a much lighter setup. Tom

there are a couple of Battenkill 3/4s at Langs Store for the right price.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

I did a major trawl on lightweights when I bought an orvis 'flea' (1.5 oz) a couple of years ago, and I opted for the white river ultralight as well.
It does makes a difference, my 4oz BBS 111 kills the rod. The UL holds 60' of a DT4 and a few twists of backing. Another option is the new orvis BBS 1
(3.2 oz?), drag sounds nicer than the UL which IMHO has one minor downside, a loud/tinny pawl click. Or one of the Austin Forbes range eg http://www.jaustinforbes.com/magreel.html. But for
value and flexibility I'd go for the ryobi if you can find one.

Thanks all I think I might have to go for the ryobi or a forbes. I just finished the rod and put on a crystal river cahill cr-0001a (tiny little graphite reel
which weighs about 2.7oz) and it is almost light enough! Never dealt with a rod this light I will also look at the White river.
Thanks for all the replies. Janus |

I have a couple of 370's, and would also suggest the Diawa 730, light, and built on the order of the click and pawl Hardy. I also have two of these. Give
me a call, 828 667-8047. Leonard Harwood

Welcome Oldflies. It's good to see you found this place. I've seen your wares on the world's largest flea market, and you've got nice vintage
reels.
