smallest size reel is going to be an Alcedo Micron, or a Cargem Mignon
http://www.mybaitshop.com/forum/messages/11256.html If it's lightest weight and durability you're looking for, Penn 4200 SS gets my vote.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Wow!!! that's one nice reel Ron. Thanks.
What is 4200ss value in good working condition? How about Garcia/Mitchell line up? Thanks Al |

hello Alpago - depending on how destructive your son is, a Diawa 700 "C" ,"H" or "X" is quite affordable. if he has a bit more
self control a 308 or 408 Mitchell would last a lifetime. I have a 408 I've used for over 30 years . Alcedo Microns or Zangi reels (true temper 411, wright
& mcgill ECO & others ) are really precision and great little reels. they are getting to the point where a beat one is approx $50. Mitchell made some
very serviceable smaller reels also 304;314;204, etc. My only concern re the Penn is weight-but make NO mistake about it they are rock solid, well made reels.
If I was a betting man i'd say the Penn spinninng reels will be high value collector reels ( if not already) in a year or so.

The easiest reel for a young beginner would be a trigger-spincast reel, like this Quantum Xtralite
http://www.troutlet.com/Q...Spin-Cast-Reels-P284.aspx As long as his index finger is long enough to reach the trigger comfortably, it's a snap to cast. An older version, the Quantum Micro MT1, is my current UL reel. I'll probably eventually get another "true" spinning reel with a bail- but even if I do, I'll keep it around for a back-up. I like the stripped down functionality of it. |

I think the Daiwa silver series #500 is smaller/lighter than the Alcedo Micron.

very nice - thank you.
Always kind of expect newer reels to be ligther - that's one reason I listed the Penn 4200SS - with graphite case, it's light as a whisper.

There is a very little reel offered by Bass Pro shops. That reel is 3.2 ounces. Don
