I did a quick look when it came in, and things looked fine. It's in decent shape cosmetically, although the "wondorod" decal is shredded. This week I finally got around to a thorough cleaning and noticed that there are what appear to be 3 fine cracks between two of the guides in the tip section. They are approximately 3/16" to 1/4" long, running parallel to the rod length; all are within 1/4" of each other. They don't go all the way through the blank (i.e. they're only on one side of the blank). Is it possible to repair or strengthen this part of the rod so that the cracks don't get worse? Or did I just get myself an expensive wall ornament? It also has some corrosion and deep scratching on the male ferrule that I missed on the first inspection (rookie mistake probably). I cleaned it with isopropanol and cotton swabs as recommended in a past post here. Any thing else I should do with that? I tried to get a picture of the cracks, but they're small (and I'm not a great photographer). I probably should have waited till I knew what to look out for before I bought a rod, but I got too excited. Use the Fly, Luke!

From your description, the rod was probably struck against a sharp edge or door. That is the type of flaw almost impossible to discover without making a careful inspection of the rod. Very few eBay sellers look that close or would know what they were seeing if they did. About your only hope is to return it for a refund if possible. This sort of damage can be repaired, but it isn't an easy fix. Your best bet is to send it to one of the guys on this forum that does repair work. It should be possible to get a new ferrule fitted as part of the deal. Tom

Hate to learn of the rod's condition. Hope it is fixable or you can get your money back. I have the 7'9" P1290. It is a favorite.

Glass is tough, and if it is just surface issues it may be alright, but...... A good looking rod for sure, might be worth your while to ship to one of the local rod builders for them to have a look at the cracks. Personally, I have a Parametric with a ding in the tip section, I slid a short (1/2") sleeve inside and then overwrapped it. Have also worked superglue down into suspected cracks as a precaution. And as Tom noted, don't kick yourself, most of us at one time or another have bought rods that had issues, is part of the game. Keith

I would apologize for snatching it, but under the circumstances you're better off that I won it. In retrospect, there weren't enough pictures in the auction. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one, though. Here you go, Keith. The best I could do, anyway. The penny is for size comparison. The round "spot" is on the side opposite the two biggest cracks. Sorry if this is too picture intensive. It's been over 2 weeks since the auction, so I doubt return is an option. I'll probably just put it in the closet. Maybe look at getting it fixed in a few years. Not sure about prices for repairs, but it might cost as much as I paid for the rod. I'll have to find out who my local rodsmiths are and check. Would it be a more difficult fix later if I superglued it now and it actually did break? Thanks for the advice, Eric P.S. -- Glad you understood what I meant about cleaning the ferrule, Tom. If it actually breaks it is pretty much totalled. The Wonderods I have seen break seem to kind of come unglued and splinter everywhere, and they are such thick-walled it is tough to get a spigot type repair in. If it was me, I would contact the seller, yup may be a long shot at this point, but why not ask? Then (if you still have rod), I would work superglue into cracks if you think you can actually get some in it. Then overwrap, spar varnish, and go fish it. I have many "repaired" rods and they are among my favorites, I consider them old warhorses, with a few scars. I aint gettin any prettier either. Hopefully other, more experienced rod gurus will kick in here. Keith
