I think remember owning several Orvis Battenkill click/pawl fly reels back in the late 90's/early 2000's but I'm not 100% that Orvis made a click/pawl Battenkill... Can someone confirm this? Also, if anyone knows where I might find one in good condition- even better :-) Thanks, S

Posts: 4341 (12/30/08 14:24:22) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	ebay is the place to look - there were a couple at Lang's Store a month ago that of course sold on ebay two weeks after that. well, gee, extremely lightweight, extrememly tight tolerances, great workmanship and probably the smoothest click-pawl ever. Made by BFR - I like them better than the CFO made by either Hardy or BFR. But be careful, there are an awful lot of Battenkill disc reels floating around - you must look closely to verify the click-pawl. Harris sportsmail in the UK closed them out about 4 years ago, so there are probably still some mint, boxed reels floating around the UK the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Battenkill click-pawls show up on ebay once in awhile. Like Bulldog said, you need to make sure that the seller knows what he's talking about. Many don't know a click-pawl from the disc drag. (also not a bad reel IMHO) I might also suggest the Madison by BFR, especially the older ones. They have the same tight tolerances and click-pawl drag system as the Battenkill. The older Madisons have metal pawls. The newer ones have plastic pawls. (Orvis can possibly replace the plastic) If you find two, let me know. I'm just not that big on disc drag, although I have a great Lamson Litespeed with a killer drag.The guys are right. Not a thing wrong with the reel, and for under $100 it was perfect.

Just to follow-up on this; if I found an Orvis Madison made in England but with Delrin/plastic pawls- would that be "bad" buy if I decided to purchase it? Would it still be made by BFR? Thanks, S

I didn't know BFR made a Madison with metal pawls until I saw one posted here. I think the poster had a question about whether the plastic pawls wear out. The original Madison was made by Pflueger and was an Orvis branded medalist. BFR has been making them since Pflueger stopped. I enjoy fishing with both versions. This reel ,Case, and 2 spools loaded with SA floater and sink tip. Can anyone date this reel and name the maker ? I Think I payed about $40.

You won't likely find them that inexpensive any more.

I don't think the pawls are a weak spot; they are virtually self-lubricating. Too much grease or oil, which then can become a gritty sludge, is more likely to shorten their life than just a tiny drop of light machine oil. http://fiberglassflyrodders.yuku.com/topic/1555

Howard suggested that I share some of my photos: Front: Back: From left to right in chronological order: The Batttenkill (Young), Battenkill Lightweight (Young), Battenkill III (Hardy), Battenkill Mark III (Hardy), Battenkill 5/6 (BFR), & Battenkill 5/6 Disc (BFR). All of the reels above are made in England & sized for 5-6 wt. line. I was telling Howard that I really liked that BFR Click & Pawl, but that would be like saying I like one of my children better than the others. They are all very fine reels. I am currently using a Mark III, like "slimed" has posted, but I so enjoy every one of them. Jamie, you're correct this is the Young version. There is a BFR version as well.

There is another Young Multiplier thet was offered by Orvis, and I think Howard has one. If I recall it was the Speedex, or was that the Shakspeare version? I remember the BFR, it version looked alot like the Battenkill Click & Pawl or Disc version at the beginning of this thread.
