I've got a 1495AK here, that I need to clean-up, and re-lubricate. I've got the approach down for basic click/pawl reels, but the innards of a medalist aren't quite as easy to decipher, with regard to what to lubricate, and what parts get grease, and which get oil? Judging by the inside of a new Medalist I have, the Manufacturer's solution is to liberally slather everything in grease. I'd like to be a bit more surgical if possible. Can anyone offer advice? Posts: 4367 (01/02/09 09:46:29) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Before you go there, though, make sure you inspect your reel closely, understand this drawing, and the location and function of each of the springs. a little oil on on the spindle, on the brass ratchet bearing, on the tensioning block screw threads, in the pawl on the back of the spool and on the handle spindle. A touch of grease on the latch groove at the end of the spindle and a touch in the ratchet grooves the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is. Last Edited By: bulldog1935 01/02/09 11:27:29. Would also suggest you look through the Cleaning Reels sticky post at the top of this forum. Scroll through this, and there's plenty of info and pics on both cleaning and lubricating that you will find useful. You might also avoid getting grease or oil on the Medalist's Brake Shoe (part 3453 in the diagram), as this might compromise the drag somewhat. Most Medalists seem to survive just about anything, though.

Luckily, this reel does not require the deep-cleaning "Bulldog Treatment"; just an adequate surface cleaning and a re-lube. The grease or oil, and where (and what to leave alone...) was just what I needed! Thanks. But I figured that wasn't the best approach. Since I'm doing the work, I want to get it right. The most likely damage or malfunction point with a Pflueger is a sticky drag-plate, which then gets burrred or gouged. Posts: 4374 (01/03/09 09:14:47) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I did say Touch of grease on the drag plate, and was assuming Hot Sauce grease (which never becomes sludgy) But I totally agree with you, Stephen. I cut and pasted my reply from a pm discussion where I was telling one to disassemble his badly sludged reel and clean each of the parts with Boeshield. I also told him that the Boeshield film alone would be enough lube on the ratchet plate, and additing a touch of Hot Sauce grease was optional. slathering grease on any reel is a mistake. When I lube a reel, I apply the grease sparingly, operate the reel, and wipe off any excess flow from the frame, etc. the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.
