But some exotic-fish enthusiasts brought in this species from South America 10 years ago. The interests went down the drain after few years - resulting in the fish being released to the natural ponds & lakes. Today, they're the main predator in most waters - eliminating the once mighty Snakeheads & Perches. But still, fishing for them is fun... and easy! __________ [ r i k i ]

Bring in an invasive species to control a different invasive species? Where have we heard this before? There is an established population of peacock bass in south Florida. They were brought in to "control" the invasive Oscars and tilapia. It worked and created a new sport fishery in south Florida. Fortunately, the peacock bass can't survive the winter temperatures of most of the continental US. Otherwise we would be discussing which species we could bring in to control peacock bass. Tom

They look like a lot of fun. That last one above looks like it would have put up a heck of a fight. What kind of flies do you guys like to use for them?

Duff Yess, Duff. That's a Peacock Bass. This is the the much weaker variants - Monocularis. But what it lacks in strength, it top it up with numbers. Their bigger & stronger cousins, The Temensis, somehow didnt manage to breed as freely & as easily as the Monocularis are. That would be an awesome opponent on a fly rod... __________ [ r i k i ]

Oh yeah, the multiple fast. They breed like Tilapias - fast & high survival rates. In most lakes & ponds, the Peacock Bass diet consist of these Snakeheads' & Perches' fries. It took only 5 years to completely eliminate these 2 main species in the lake shown in the photos. The sad thing is; these two are the original species and regarded as the top 2 best freshwater game fish in Malaysia. Sigh... __________ [ r i k i ]

Mainly Clousers & Charlies - in red, white, chart combo. I believe that they will whack anything that pass in front of them. But the trend here in Malaysia is; the Peacocks are more interested in flies rather than hard-bodies lures or soft-plastics... The biggest catch recorded is around 8+lb here in Malaysia. But that size is very uncommon. I personally think the more commoner 5-pounders would get a good bend on my 5WT... __________ [ r i k i ]
