Below are a few photos of a 3pc. 8ft/6wt. McFarland blank that Mark [Gypsy] of Gypsy Rod Works built for me. As you can see the work is outstanding! I was
looking for something different than red/brown wraps you generally see with this color blank. I wanted a [darker] green wrap but the darker green didn't
look good. Mark suggested the olive wraps/black tipping and...well you can see for yourself. Excellent! Thanks Mark!

Thanks! The thread is YLI/KNK 50wt silk, color #161; 100wt color is #236. Anglers workshop sells it as "Granger Green". All the wraps got 3-4
coats of color preserver. Silk thread with cp opens up a whole new world of some very classy thread options.
Originally I had wrapped the McFarland blank with GudeBrod medium green but after I had coated the wraps with epoxy it quickly became obvious that the medium green looked like crap. (I had done a test wrap on the butt section with varnish and thought it looked OK). After talking with Tony/Boo we decided to go with one of the red colored threads but after getting off the phone with him I remembered a spool of "granger green" thread I had in the depths of the thread box and wanted to give it a try. I had seen a pictures of a bamboo "browntone" rod with light green wraps on Clark's board that looked really sharp in my mind and that was the look I was going after. 3- 4 coats of color preserver kept the color pretty close to the spool color and in the end I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. |

Boy! That is a nice rod.
I was tempted to call Gypsy out for using a color scheme I'm using on a black rod, but I kind of figured that was a bit like a paint by numbers guy calling out Monet. Boo, I envy your possession. Gypsy, I envy your skill. K Gypsy, is that stripper the carbide ring model from Angler's Workshop? |

Mark, as always, beautiful work and the careful attention to detail and color that lift your work to the level of art, or even beyond. I'm a huge Gypsy Rod
Works fan.
Boo, I love that Hardy reel on that rod. Mike |

For the hardware junkies the stripping guide is a Mildrum srmc size 12 . It's a gorgeous guide imo and a lot more affordable than the agate guides.
Reel seat hardware is a nickel silver Bellinger dltb 720 ns with redwood burl insert Hook keeper is nickel silver ring and saddle and the WC is ns also.
The color preserver is.....Minwax polycrylic, $5 will get you a life time supply and this stuff is better than any specialized rod building color preserver that I have used. I apply it straight from the can and let it dry for at least 4 hrs between coats. At least 3 coats was necessary to fully protect the thread. Thanks again |
