seidner,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! I love the Catskills. Unfortunately, I live in Kansas and I haven't fished there for over 15 years. Sniff. I love Cape Cod even more. I spent my summers there when I was young. I don't miss the East Coast traffic, but I do miss the fishing. Tom |

I made a Pilgramage to the Catskills a few years ago. My Grandfather lived in Delancy for many years. He caught two nine pound browns in two days on the Pepacton. That feat made it into his Obit. My father fished those fabled Catskill waters after WWII and into the early 50s. The Neversink was his favorite. He used to fish through the prison grounds and had that stretch down like the back of his hand. I wanted to fish that area before he died so I fished the Neversink with no luck, but I trod in his footsteps. I did a float on the Upper Delaware with Indian Springs Guides. Tremendous fishing. I caught many 16" bows and lost one monster brown that took me deep into my backing twice before my tippet failed or I failed. The Catskill Fly fishing Museum was another highlight of the trip. Sitting at Lee wulffs fly tying table was an honor. I'm like MacArthur with the Catskills, I shall return. Welcome to FF RFMcD |

Hello all, I just found this forum and I look forward to communicating with all of you here and perhaps learning a thing or two. I am a lifelong fly fisherman
and I live in Albuquerque, NM. I found this forum because I just bought my first glass rod and I love the way it feels! It loads slowly and is very predictable
and has a smoothness that I find very relaxing, almost Zen like in nature. I anticipate fishing with this rod in the small streams of Northern New Mexico and
Southwest Colorado. I am interested to know of the experiences of all here with glass rod fly fishing compared to fishing with graphite rods. Regards, Kix

hello kisoxrt66, tell us about your new rod. We like to hear it all over and over even if it is a rod we are familiar with. Welcome. Many of us still have our
favorite graphite rods, in my case a Fenwick Streamer 5 wt and a Scott SAS 6 wt. . I don't know that I can compare because I fish whatever feels good in my
hands. Ah, there it is, the feel. I am in Oregon and would love to fish your area, heck I would love to fish everywhere.

New Rod | ||
|
Hello Paul, I happened to be perusing the fly rod rack at the local Sportsman's Warehouse when I saw what appeared to be a new split cane rod. As it turns
out it was an inexpensive WW Grigg GLASS rod that was made to look like a cane rod. I thought to myself "Clever marketing...but who wants a GLASS
rod?" Then I picked it up. Voila! It had a feel unlike any of my many graphite rods...it felt like...lo and behold...a split cane rod without the weight!
The price was reasonable so I thought "What the heck...I'll give it a try. This rod is a 5/6 weight 8'6" rod that is about 90% glass with
some percentage of graphite. It has a laminated wood reel seat and fairly decent hardware. I took it home and quickly put my vintage Battenkill on it and stood
out under the street light in front of my house in 40 degree weather for over an hour! I couldn't believe that this El Cheapo rod could feel so smooth, so
rythmic, so excellent in my hand! It took just a couple of casts to get myself accustomed to the slower loading and the longer wait on the back cast, but
within minutes I was turning over the most incredibly smooth flowing loops that just seemed to float in mid air. I had tied a small piece of yarn to the end of
my leader and I wanted to test myself for accuracy. I went inside and emerged with an old frisbee for a target. I put the frisbee near the curb about 40 feet
in front of me and on the first cast the bit of yarn floated down smack dab in the center of it like a snowflake! I was able to do this over and over again!
Astonishing! Now from what I have read here over the last two hours, it seems that most of the folks here are into vintage glass rods. I'm sure that there
will be some purists who will smirk at my new "quasi" glass rod. That's OK...I understand. I have to say that if nothing else, this experience
has opened my eyes to the world of glass rods. I'm sure that I will be looking for previously overlooked examples at yard sales and pawn shops from now on.
And to those purists out there...go to your local sports shop and pick up one of these inexpensive Grigg rods...you might be pleasantly surprised. Oh and
Paul...if you ever find yourself in this neck of the woods, give me a shout...I know some great little Brookie pools where nobody goes...pristine and
unforgettable! Kix

Kix...welcome to Fiberglass Flyrodders! Your experience was much like my reintroduction to fiberglass after years of fishing graphite fly rods. Great to have
you around the site...and look forward to seeing some photos maybe from your favorite trout streams out West!

Welcome Kix, I'm located in north central Colorado but try to get to your neck of the woods at least once a year. I love NM, so maybe we can hook up this
coming year.

Welcome and Merry Christmas down there in the Duke City. I live in a southern suberb of Denver, and I miss New Mexico trout fishing. Are there still brown
trout in the clear ditch near the Rio Grande where it goes through the town of Corrales? I had a great day fishing hoppers there one summer. I used to travel
to northern NM for business, and fish my way home. Welcome to the forum, and to fiberglass rods. Lots to learn here, and a fun place as well.

Hello Cofisher!,
Sure friend! You show me some of your spots and I'll show you some of mine. Recently I've had some good days a couple of miles up Elk Creek. It's a backpack in, backpack out fishing trip, but you'll have a whole section of streamm to yourself all day and there are four species in one stretch...Cutthroats, Rainbows, Brookies and Browns! It's a nice little stream that runs through several meadows where stream access is easy and the fish haven't had chicken sized flies thrown at them all summer. It's hard to find though...you won't find it on a map unless you already know your way around. Look me up when your planning a trip to this area and I'll hook you up...pardon the pun! Kix |

where is everyone from | ||

I am from Columbia, Missouri. I fish mostly in ponds, streams, and lakes---a couple times a year I go to southern Missouri to the trout parks ( a couple hour
drive).
My main interest is bluegills and I make my own flies---two very good ones are the squirrelly and the bully bugger--the biggest to date was an 11 inch red ear---If any of you are close by send a line and maybe we can fish some water together. good fishing Gary |

midmofly...welcome to Fiberglass Flyrodders! Those two flies sound really interesting and if you wouldn't mind sharing I am still looking for a few more
submissions for the FLY OF THE WEEK posts that will start
on January 1st. Oh...and by the way...what fiberglass you fishing?

Gary,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! There are actually quite a few of us from the Heartland. I'm near Kansas City myself. We really should have some sort of gathering in the trout parks or on the White River. There are also the twice a year Texas Glassics, if you don't mind a drive. I'm familiar with the bully bugger, but the squirrelly is a new one to me. Any chance you could post a photo or recipe? Tom |

Hi Tom,
I fish with several brands of rod--as I have 2 kids in college and 1 more getting ready to go, I stick with the working mans rods---wonderods/conolon/heddon/ wright mcgill/H-I As for the squirrelly (kirk dietrich original maker)---it is a scaled down clouster minnow using a size 10 hook and squirrel hair and bead chain---you can get the recipe on "fly tying world"---go to fly recipes Gary |

Cameron,
I answered your inquiries on a reply to Tom---something I would like to add concerning the squirrelly is there are 2 things that my brother (a spin/fly guy) and I both noticed when fishing it, is 1) the bluegills run bigger and 2) they take the fly deeper--like they are trying to swallow it straight down---much more so than any other fly I use on them. As for posting photos or recipes-- well when it comes to using the computer I am only one step above using stone tablets. Gary |

Gary...stone tablets? HA... OK...point taken. Glad to have you around here and I have a soft spot for those old Heddon Pal's.

[Don't know how I missed this thread for so long, but better late than never . . .]
I'm from Montrose, CO (in western Colorado, 1 hr south of Grand Junction, 1 hr north of Telluride, 2 hr north of Durango). Montrose is home to a few notable fishing related entities: Ross Reels, Scott fly rods, & the Gunnison River running through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. I typically fish the Uncompaghre River, Gunnison River, Taylor River and many high country spring creeks up in the majestic San Juan Mountains. The fishing's better here than where I grew up (Chicago). Best regards, Abe |
