Sceptre guide placement |

I've searched the archive without any success for the guide spacing recommendations for the 8.5' Sceptre blanks. Can anyone point me in the right
direction? I'm planning to put one together this winter.
Thanks Jeff |

you asked about and 8 1/2' Sceptre. My rod is 9' assembled exactly. It is the Sceptre by Constable of Bromley
butt section - measured from end of cork: 23 3/4 to stripper guide 33 1/8 to first guide and 41 3/4 to second guide measured from end of tip section: 13 3/8, 21, 27 3/8, 33 1/8, 38 7/8, 43 1/2, 47 7/8, 51 7/8 and then 55 to the very end of the tiptop all measurements were from the center of each guide. |

One of the absolute wonderful things about the Sceptre blanks we got is that they are just that. Blanks. You would be far better off buying a vintage Sceptre
or Fisher Hardy rod. On the other had you own a vintage blank that will never again be made. What are you fishing for? let that dictate your build. Given
saltwater for tuna and salmon, river inlets for stripper, salmon and steelhead, up river for salmon and steelhead, or on a big lake for big bass, each rod
should be build a little different and specific, thats the beauty of owning your own blank, not building a genaric rod, heck they were built in abundence
decades ago, but building one specific to the way you want to fish it. Otherwise just buy one off the shelf, you have a vintage premium blank, what exactly do
you really want in a rod?

jeffjon,
I assembled my first glass rod this past spring and it was the 8' 6' sceptre. My guide spacings are as follow from tip of the blank to the first snake guide is 2 3/4" then to the next is 4" ,5, 5 1/2, 6 1/2, 7 1/2, 8 1/4, 10 1/8 then to the upper stripper 10 5/8 and to the next stripper 11". These measurements were taken with both pieces joined together tightly. Try these specs. if it is to you liking or else you can deviate accordingly to the action you prefer. Hope this helps.

Need help with Sceptre guides. | ||
|
I am having a local rod builder build my 8'6" sceptre. He is a well respected rod builder but builds mainly graphite rods and I am concerned with
getting the guide size right. He suggested that we use two stripping guides a 16mm and a 12mm. That seems way too big to me.I will be using the T&T guide
spacing for 8'6".
Can someone reccomend stripping guide and snake guide sizing for the 8'6"? Thanks, Max |

Max,
Keep in mind, guide spacing, placement, and choice are controversial subjects for rod builders. All rod builders, even amateurs like me, have cherished opinions and theories that we defend zealously. However, none of us can prove our theory is better than another in a rigorously scientific manner. That said... I think your rod builder has the right idea. The 8'6" Sceptre is not a gentle, light line rod. You are going to shoot line with your rod and the bigger the stripper guides, the better. 16 mm and 12 mm would be the SMALLEST strippers I would consider. A couple years ago, I won an FF83 Fenwick rod off eBay. This is the only glass 4 weight Fenwick ever made in the US. These rods were made as a special run for members of the Golden Gate Angling & Casting club. The rod arrived with an extra guide wrapped on about 6" from the factory stripper. This was a big 20 mm guide ring and looked completely out of place on a 4 weight. I decided I would take the guide off as soon as I could. But I really wanted to try the rod, so I took it out back for a test cast. The guy who wrapped that guide on the rod knew what he was doing. The setup works well, even if it isn't pretty. Tom |
