3 wt 7 1/2 " rod question? |
Lead | |

I'm looking for a 3 wt 7 1/2 ft fiberglass rod. Sort of an entry level rod, any ideas?

Riflegunbuilder,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! If you are looking for a 7'6" light line glass, your best bet is a modern builder. Check out the rod builders in our Modern Rod Wiki. Your best bet is probably Mark Steffen. If you are willing to consider a 7 foot, 3 weight you will have a lot more options (particularly a custom Lamiglas build or perhaps the new Hardy rods). Do you roll your own rods or are you looking for a factory/custom build? And what sort of budget were you considering? Tom |

Are you adamant about a 3wt. and it being 7 1/2ft? There are quite a few nice 7'/3wts and 7 1/2'/4wts etc.

I want to stay with 3 wt. I would flex on length.

If you can find a Diamondglass 3pc 7'/3wt or a 7'/3wt Winston Retro I believe they are two of the best 3wts out there. Of course neither is presently
made but the Diamondglass is quite a bargain. By the way there is a Diamondglass 7 1/2ft 3wt on Ebay. I'm not as familiar with them but have read they will
handle a 4wt as well. The Diamonglass 2pc rods are a bit quicker than the 3pc and you may not be happy with them.

Don't worry about the Diamondglass 7 1/2' 3wt 2pc. If you can find one, get it. They are excellent, downright superb.

Yeh, about the only thing wrong with that 7'6" 3wt Diamondglass is that it's not brown. If it was brown and a 3pc it could make it on my list as
one of my all time favorite rods. Damn, I'm a picky SOB. I guess that's why they call me:

Price range would be helpful. Another suggestion would be a 7' or 7' 6" 3/4 wt. Riffle glass rod. There are lots of other choices out there especially if you "roll you own". Doug |

The Riffle 7 1/2' - 3/4wt. is very smooth. I tried the finished rod with a WF4 and a DT3. The DT3 was perfect. IMO, it'd work fine with a WF3, if you
want a light, crisper feel. Really nice bamboo colored rod (not just a "starter"). The blanks are $75, and Phil sells components too.

...I agree with tonemike and crusty on the diamondglass 7'for 3... I use mine quite a bit on the spring creeks in NY and PA... nice rod.. mess around with
different lines until you find a few that work as you like it to... Bob

There have been a couple of threads about Kettle Creek, most notably this one. Phil isn't a
computer kind of guy. So phone or fax are your best bets for making contact. They sell blanks and rods built on those blanks.
