Classic glass spinning rods |
Lead | |
|
The only fishable glass spinning rod I have is a 7 1/2 foot Eagle Claw Spin Fly pack rod. I have caught a ton of trout with that puppy, throwing fly and
bubble rigs in lakes. I have an old made-in-France Garcia Mitchell 304 that works great. Any suggestions for a classic glass rod to go with it? My Garcia
Conolon searches always turn up spinning rods on eBay, as do the Parametric searches. Any advise for a cheapskate like me? If I were to list GC, St. Croix,
Berkley and Fenwick, what spinning rods am I missing? Suggestions for a light action?

I take this outfit out 2 or 3 times a season then back into their respective box and tube. Very sweet spin combo.

I gave up on converting my wife to fly fishing and accepted her for who she is, an ace with a spin rod.
I found this mint Phillipson Epoxite 7' with light and medium action tips, and matched it with a Mitchell 400 for her at Christmas a few years back.

An early Phillipson, from the 50s. Not sure what a Tennessee handle is.
I picked up a 50s era 7' Phillipson spinning rod the other day. Missing the first guide ring, and has a few surface scuffs, but other than that, it looks good. I'll need another guide before I can cast it, of course.

Garcia 2500D 5' Ultralight Spinning Rod | ||
|
My old standby ultralight rod, from the late 60s.
Conolon Brown, but somehow only rated by Garcia as a 3-star...still, I think it was their top of the line in ultralight that year, it's nicely built. My first UL rod, a Conolon Blue, was the model below that one. It was significantly more cheaply built, with softer metal guides that got wear ruts, and a ferrule that eventually came unglued. The 2500D has been solid as a rock. And although it has a metal ferrule, the action is as sweet as the Fenwicks and Brownings I've handled. |

Not sure what a Tennessee handle is.The Tennessee Handle, made popular by Billy Westmoreland on Dale Hollow in the 1950's, has no reel seat. The reel is attached to the rod at the point where it best balances using friction tape. It's very popular for ultralight and very sensitive outfits. As an aside, I use a variation of the Tennessee handle on my biggest surf casting rods. This wasn't uncommon on Cape Cod back in the day. I used a "cork tape" as the 38" casting handle (I have an 11' 6" Lamiglass white one-piece surf spin blank) and then placed the reel (a big Penn, of course) where it best balanced for that day's fishing. A different placement might be needed if I was casting a Reverse Atom, a 3 ounce tin squid, or setting the rod in a surf rod holder and bottom fishing a fillet of sea robin on a 6/0 hook with 6 ounces of pyramid sinker to hold the whole thing in place. The reel is secured using a pair of pipe clamps over-wrapped with friction tape. I never had a single failure.... Joe C. "Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the

Wow! What a "flashback". One summer as a kid I helped out the local sporting goods store guy, Whitey, on Saturday mornings. I would burn some trash
and stuff. He promised me a new baseball glove. Don't want to say how long ago that was, but the glove was a Roberto Clemente model. Anyhow, Whitey would
wrap fiberglass (that's all they had back then) surf rods for sale and, yes, he'd wrap the handle/grip with cork tape.
Thanks for the memories, Joe. |

For those Garcia Mitchell reel fans who don't know about it, check out The Fisher-Man (ebay seller- search in <ebay Stores> and <by store
name>). This guy auctions a constantly rotating supply of NOS spinning reel parts esp. G-M (including those tuff bail wire replacements).
Never met him, but he has 100% feedback, decent prices, and I've been quite pleased with a couple of purchases.

many people call twin sliding bands that let you position the reel anywhere along the cork a Tennessee handle.

Is it made of hollowglass?
What lure wt. do you recommend on it? Have you got any idea of how old it is? |
