Phillipson Glass Fly Rod |
Lead | |
|
I have a 7 1/2' Phillipson "Special" fibreglass fly rod, S76, 3 3/4, HDH. The rod has an aluminum reel seat and nickel silver ferrule, similar
to my 8" cane Phillipson Pacemaker. The glass is dark brown with maroon wraps and full wells handle. Can anyone tell me the age and value of this rod?

Gary,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! You have a Phillipson from the early 50s. Phillipson made both cane and glass, and was darned good at both. I think his nickel silver ferrules were the best drawn metal ferrules made. The S76 model was the "economy" model of the time, the P models were a little more elaborate. But Bill Phillipson didn't make bad rods, just some were decorated a little more. Value? Like any other collectible, it depends on condition. In great condition, maybe $75-90. In poor condition, probably closer to $25-50. In this case, you are probably best off fishing with it. Tom |

Gary, I've added your Phillipson "Special" to our list of Phillipson names. Thanks.

S76 HDH | ||

I recently bought one of these rods. This one simply says Phillipson with Worlds Finest in tiny print in the logo, then S76 HDH 3 3/4. It has a rose (notice I
didn't say "pink") reel seat and black or very dark brown wraps with red tipping. It also has gold tipping at the base of the ferrules. It feels
great but I haven't had a chance to fish it yet. It balances perfectly with my old 3 1/2" J. W. Young Beaudex and all I can say is that there is
something about the way it flexes that is VERY appealing: can't wait to get it on a stream. It says HDH (6wt) but it seems quite soft. I'd be
interested in hearing what line weights other owners of this older model 7 1/2' Phillipson use. -Roy
