Registered Member Posts: 1 (10/27/08 16:29:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	My high school fly fishing club was just given 4 rods from a friend whose Dad has passed on. One of the rods was a low level graphite-of no interest here(but a fine gift to a student with no rod!)... the problem is, he handed me 3 rods- in tubes with decals intact- of fiberglass rods. All are Beans Double L rods- one a 6 1/2 ft 6wt, one a 71/2 ft and one an 8ft. Neither the 71/2 nor the 8ft rod have line weight numbers on them. The 61/2 DOES, and has a cork band reel seat. I know Beans had these rods made by a large company to mass produce rods...but I don't know who/what type. I can say these rods are butternut yellow with no intermediate wraps. The cork is tapered into the cap on where the rod comes out of the cork. Can you people tell me where I can find more info on this? I don't want to take rods from a friend as a donation if these are worth significant bucks. He was told by a neighbor that fiberglass rods were not worth any money. Thanks all. Hutch from Maine

These are both made by Phillipson and, IMO, shared by a few here, are among the best fly rods ever made. the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

I'm afraid the neighbor had it wrong. If the glass rods match the photos bulldog posted, they are worth more than the graphite. If possible, could you post a couple of photos? What is the goal for your school fly fishing club? What sort of fishing does the club do? It may be possible to sell the LL Bean rods and finance the purchase of a few suitable graphite rods. By the way, there is nothing wrong with graphite, it just isn't the main topic of interest at this forum. Tom

Those are the exact rods!!! The Featherweight rod is without a single mark on it- I mean, I bet it has never had a reel attached. Ballpark worth? I tend to think we should return them to him. Hutch

Even the 8'er is a Great rod, and IMO is still worth about $200. If you really want to get rid of them, you'll blow the doors off ebay... you could always list them for a bit less here, and split the cash with your friend. Posts: 3989 (10/27/08 21:09:34) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	btw, they're probably all 6-wts. you can experiment with a lot of good lines, but I like short-belly WF lines, like Teeny First Cast and SA Head Start on short rods, and either full length WF or DT on the longer rods. the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Keep me updated as to what you decide to do with those rods. Is your friend that gave the rods a Fisherman? If so he will probable love those rods. You should try them too. They might cure that nasty cane habit of yours. I've been longing for a light Phillipson since I cast a couple at the Clave in Deerfield a few years ago. Cheers RFMcD

As for the school I work at, we have had a fly fishing club for about 6 years. We have on average about a dozen active kids-and we have raised enough money each year to spend a weekend at Grand Lake stream fishing for salmon. For the last 3 years running, every student has landed at least one quality salmon- many on flies they tied themselves. We also have a part in putting on the Bamboo casting meeting called "SuperBoo" each year- our gym hosts casters of Sante's rods and dozens more...maybe we need to expand our nets to include glass! As it stands now, 3 more schools have started or are going to start fishing clubs also. It seems like a worthy use of time- and I have enjoyed every minute. As for rods/reels/ etc. we have been blessed. People are uncommonly generous. we have rods for every kid-with excellent reels-waders, nets, lines, furled leaders, boots...everything. Our local T.U. groups comes in with vises and we tie many of the flies we use. Our kids also do a day of helping very young kids tie their first flies(at the MAine sportsman show). We tend to only fish trout/salmon- but all fishing is good with us. Bass fishing here is excellent with flies- and with the Kennebec river 300 yards away, we can fish for bass all season. As for the rods we had for a while...we have returned them to the donor. Kathy Scott is the other advisor with me, and we feel that the people who gave us these rods were poorly advised as to possible worth. I do not know what they will do with these rods... I did look the rods over again this morning...and there is not a single mark- not a slight scratch on the 61/2 foot reel seat. We both are sure that rod has never even been strung up. The 71/2 foot rod is only slightly more used-still unfished we expect. The 8 foot rod was clearly the rod the owner used-and it is in fine shape. Man,I want the 6.6 . Hutch
