Back when I was working as a writer, the editor of my mag, got a comped trip to Tiawan, to see a powertool importers, factories. They took a group of other
editors on the tour, and they got to see everything from guys making parts in dirt pit forges, to high end, computer controlled, CNC machinery. Asia can make a
decent fly rod. If you want one, you just have to get past the stigma of it's origin. Hardy's biggest job will be marketing. Making a decent rod is the
easy part. Especially if the economy starts tanking.

Is how they are described - better recovery than really slow glass but still loads in close. I like the idea. Wish they were made in UK. Still, the Aln may
be worth 299 fro a 5' 2wt.

I played with the 8ft 5wt a few months ago, that was the only glass rod the Hardy Rep. had,,,,,, rather soft action.
The shorter rods are presently on back order. Made in Korea. Regards, FK

Thanks for the link Kinzua. Looks nice and the grip looks like the one that was on the Scott Fibertouch from the 1990s. In yen to dollar, the prices are
roughly $400-$450. You can either hope the US prices will be lower or hope the yen crashes...lol!

Nope, not for me. If I had $300, I'd build a McFarland or Steffen. With all the different glass options we seem to have now I think its even more important
to buy blanks or rods from our original builders of glass? I take a lot of pride in knowing my vintage rods are all made right here, by americans. A car made
in Asia sure, phones, tv's etc made in Asia -okay. But my fly fishing rods are all more important than that. Its different when it comes to that.

Mike, I see your point but I disagree with you. The raw cane may come from Asia, but I'd still prefer to buy a rod made by an American builder. Look at
some of the Japanese rods available after the war, no comparison to the rods made in the USA.

I don't mind buying products made elsewhere as long as the company is making a effort at providing a living wage and safe conditions to it's labor force and respects the environment.I try not to support companies that circumvent labor and environmental laws in their home country by using labor in a country that has no such laws or turns a blind eye to violaters. Besides, I like Steffen's and McFarland's too... |

We don't necessarily have a lock on artistry, craftsmanship, or work ethic. I've got a Japanese Studio Thin Line glass rod that will stand before any
competition here or elsewhere, and it was made by one craftsman, not nameless, faceless factory workers paid slave wages. I've also got a bamboo rod made
by Danish maker Bjarne Fries that will stand among the best in the world. It's certainly defensible to decide to own only American rods, but I wouldn't
base that on the idea that they are better made than anyone else's. There are good rods and bad from all over, and I'm thankful for the opportunity to
own a few examples of the best from overseas--wish I could afford several more! -CC

Your humble admin has been beating the bushes for information on the new Hardy Classic Lightweight Series of rods. I've distilled what I found into a new
Hardy Wiki listing. I still don't know
if the ferrules are spigots or tip over butt. I'm told the casting action is not as slow and languid as the prior Hardy Perfections. I'm also told
the rods are made in one of the better factories in Korea. After production, the rods are shipped to England for final inspection before distribution.
Hardy & Greys has made some big changes. For those of us in the United States, Hardy set up a new distribution center in Pennsylvania and severed their relationship with Cortland. Hardy North America was scheduled to start operations in late October, so I expect new stock will be hit and miss for a couple of months. I'm told Hardy North America will eventually import the entire Hardy & Greys line of products. As mentioned earlier by Scud Dog, Cortland is selling off their remaining stock of Hardy gear. However, they aren't discounting it as deeply as a couple months back. Tom |

Hello
First a warm welcome to Mike your impeccable reputation proceeds you ! Thanks for sharing the information on this new fiberglass series of rods from Hardy with all of us here on Fiberglass Fly Rodders . OK now lets talk turkey folks a News Flash if you figure in the cost of inflation the classic fiberglass rods purchased when new in todays market would be well in excess of $300.00 . When the T & T Heirloom rods came out at near twice the price of this Hardy offering I heard nothing but the same story Price Price Price. All that talk about price and so forth it looks as thought a great rod by a reputable U.S. maker is out of the average fisherman's reach ! Face it folks to get a reasonably priced rod of any material from a Established company on the level of Hardy you are going to pay $300.00 bucks or more thats a fact. Compared with the prices on Hardy Graphite Hardy's lowest priced Graphite list at $299.00 that's the low end rod and they go up from there. Now everyone knows I have the utmost respect for Mike McFarland and The Steffen bros they make great rods and so do many others. But in fairness lets not put down the efforts of Hardy before any of you have even had the chance to cast one. I hear around here all the time how we are disappointed how this company or that company discontinued making fiberglass fly rods. How many times have I heard how this one or that one wished Hardy still made fiberglass rods. Maybe they will offer blanks ,maybe if this takes off they can afford to bring back some of the old tapers and models? Remember Hardy is no newcomer to Fiberglass and some of the best Fiberglass rods ever made came from the House of Hardy with the aid of J.T. How can you say that it's not of good quality just because it's not made in England I got news for you Hardy rods never had the best quality workmanship in my opinion when compared to rods made here in the states in terms of hardware and finishing techniques . So we should be thrilled that the people from the house of Hardy have answered our requests and needs- and offered a new line of fiberglass fly rods at a comparatively competitive price. What would you prefer the price to be $150.00 low balled and deeply hurt all the other rod companies you are so fond of and the next thing you know they are gone. Wake up smell the coffee and don't be so sure some of the blanks you think are made right here are not in fact made elsewhere. I got some news this afternoon and one of the Hardy rods is in my neighborhood and I will be doing some test casting and evaluations and let you know what I think of the rod I sample. Remember this Hardy is not a U.S. company so most of the Hardy rods with the exception of the rods made on the old K.F. blanks were all made overseas. It's more a question of how good the design of the rods are , how well they perform in addition to the quality standards that really counts. Most of you that know me from the beginning of this site know that I am no big fan of rods made overseas but that is based on the above criteria not just the physical location of the shop. And yes with unemployment and the rest of the challenges we face I am all for American made products and bringing the rod business back home but Hardy was never American made and if the rods will help the owners of the fly shops that carry them here keep the doors open and food on there tables I hope the rods live up to our expectations. Just my opinions not intended to ruffle any feathers lets just give the new rods a chance. Tight Lines and Hardy Made Loops Andy M

Colleagues,
I received a new rod in the mail today and wanted to share some preliminary thoughts and pics. This discussion has already started, (see the link in Glass tech), so here's some additional data for the group. I had it out on the lawn in the rain, and found the action to be very pleasing - in the mid-flex of the glass range spectrum. Further casting analysis will take place in conjunction with Old Yankee Riverine Consulting Services, LLC later this week, so stay tuned for that report. As for aesthetics, it has some sweet features. The reel seat looks just like the one on my Palakona. They kept it light and very old school there and also included a ferrule keeper. From the pics, you'll see the dark green color of the blanks and spigot ferule. They have an epoxy coated cork cap for the rod tube which is also a nice touch.
