Favorite Spinning Lines |
Lead | |
|
This new addition to the forum has rekindled my interest in spinning. Before the snow flies, I'd like to get out a least once with the spinning rod. I
need to refresh some lines. Anyone have a favorite line they could recommend? My last favorite line was Gamakatsu G-Power - a nice low memory, low stretch,
clear mono.

I generally respool my spinning equipement when winter hits, my wife isn't that diehard so I fly fish and she stays home when its below freezing out.
Anyway I just picked up two spools of line for our ultra lights, of course they will supply many years of line, although I have 8 rigs set up for the son and
family when they come up as well. Anyway this is this years choice,
Mustad Ultra Line UL MAX 4# a clear to white in appearance. Cajun Red by Shakespeare, 4#, a deep translucent red. Ive used this same line on heavier salt water and deeper freshwater rigs, they say the color is invisible when in 3ft of water, don't know, I don't see the same way as fish do, but on my none toothy saltwater gear I like a 25ft shock leader attached to my main line of Power-Pro braided. Likewise for lake trolling and bay fishing, I have the same outfits abet lighter lines and gear. I used to use alot of 2# test lines, but they seem to be harder to find now days, don't even see the bulk spools listed on Ebay anymore so have no idea what happened? I enjoy light lines on ultra lights, however the 4# seems to be the standard available now on Ebay and locally. Richard |

Get one of the quality braids; I use Fireline since I can't get Spiderwire Fusion anymore. The advantages of braid over mono are many; once I switched, I
never went back.
That said, alot of guys will argue just as vehemently about the superiority of mono (they're wrong), so I guess it's just personal taste. Dave |

I have 10-lb. spiderwire on a Penn 4200SS ultralight I use occasionally in the salt (landed a 32" redfish on it), so I definitely see the advantages.
I use this reel in the salt on a 7' Falcon light spinning rod - about the lightest rod you would want to take inshore fishing. Where I don't see an advantage for it is in freshwater ultralight spinning with a 5' rod where 4-lb. mono does the job just fine.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

In the salt- i like Spiderwire Stealth if I can find it or Fireline.
Freshwater- I really like Stren Magnathin or Trilene XL. I like the limp lines for ease of casting. Lou |

The trilene XL I have found to be the nicest stuff on spinning gear...

Trilene XT and XL. Back in the early 90's when I had a boat and I used to spin fish a couple of times a week, I bought three spools, I forget if they
were 1000 or 3000 yard spools of 4, 6, and 8 lb test. I was pretty picky about changing out the line on the ultra lights one or two times a year. Anyway, the
XT is tough stuff, but has a bit of a memory/coiling issue. I've noticed that the XL is about as tough and is nice supple line. I have been using it for
tippit material and like it. I have been too cheap to break down and get a braided line, but I think that I'm gonna fill up a spool and try some out real
soon.

Braid lasts much longer than mono, so the cost is not an issue. No memory either, so coiling is not an issue either; I was respooling with mono several times
each year, plus fighting all those streamside birds nests on the reel with mono. The absence of stretch with braid allows for superior hooksets as well,
particularly important when finessing plastics in current, eg., senkos. The only downside I've seen is the ease with which braid nicks, so frequent reties
and line inspection are essential. I've also had abit of trouble when using a flouro leader as the mono seems to cut the leader at the knot, but 90% of
the time here in Ohio a leader isn't needed. Smallmouth aren't leader-shy and our flows tend to be somewhat stained through the Summer.

I can't stand the coiling problem with some brands of mono. And once it's spooled wrong, it never really goes away. Trilene and Stren have been the
best of what I've tried. All the other brands I've tried are unsatisfactory in comparison. But I'm intrigued by the post about braided line, and
Spiderwire. The advantages sound pretty good. Does it come in ultralight test?

Berkley Fireline comes in 4 lb test. Others come in 6 lb and 8 lb test. Most of this looks like heavy fly tying thread to me. I have a friend who swears by
gel spun braided line on his crappie rig because the braid has so little stretch.

Tom, the Berkley Fireline is probably an 8lb. pound test line and the diameter would match that compared to an 4# tippet line.

The 4 lb FireLine spool indicates 0.13 mm diameter, or 0.0051". It measures 0.0055". That's about the equivalent of 6X tippet, which now a days has a 3-3.5 lb breaking strength. Of course, FireLine has a reputation for breaking strengths 2-3 times the rating on the box. Berkley XT 4 lb mono measures 0.0090" and it has a reputation for a higher break strength too. Why is is that fishing tackle manufacturers can't ever put the proper numbers on their products? It makes me want to start checking my sinker weights to see if they are wrong too. Tom |

Tom, when it comes to sinkers and catfish I don't even think about it. A pocket full of nuts and washers work great.
