Curious to see every one's preference in reel seat hardware. I know some prefer sliding bands on lighter weight rods and up-lock or down-lock on
heavier weight rods but I am interested in which type you prefer over the others and why.

I voted down-locking, assuming that the Slide band choice is a two slide band seat. I like the looks of the down-locking cap and ring the best, but for most
glass rods thats not an option since butt diameters are too large for the majority of modern cap and ring seats. I like the down-locking screw seats as well.

I just purchased a rod with a double-ring sliding band,
and I really can appreciate the primitive simplicity of it. Also, with underlying cork, it lightens the overall weight of the rod, a tad; compared to metallic seat hardware. I don't own an example, but a fixed, down-locking "seat" at the rod's butt, with a single, sliding ring band at the tip-side, looks pretty good to me too...

Voted downlock and generally prefer. Exceptions, if using a palming rim reel large enough that will foul against clothing when the rod's held close to my
chest, then I'd probably use a downlock for what is, in effect, a short fighting butt that also keeps the reel clear. Downlock is far more traditional with
'glass anyway and helps keep the balance point closer to the hand in heavy rods. In fact, I don't recall uplock being common at all until the lighter
rods of the graphite era, and the smaller diameter, palming rim reels that evolved as preferences shifted to WF lines.

I like down-locking screw-lock seats with detached hoods. Preferably with two threaded bands.
It must be my vibrations- I can use all the security I can get. It isn't that big of an issue, but unless I have a pocketed screw-lock, I always end up re-tightening my reel seat sooner or later. I have some up-locking rods I enjoy, like the Hardys. But the up-lock slot is a bit loose for the front part of the foot on some of my reels, even when it's tightened up all the way. It's a nuisance. Minor but noticeable. Looks-wise, nothing beats sliding rings. But the fit of the reel foot has to be just right. Or else.

DL cap and band all the way. Every time I go fishing w/ my sceptre that has a cap and band reel seat I catch myself thinking "damn that's some fine
looking gear".

I voted uplock. I guess it has been a graphite thing for a long time. Maybe the light graphite blanks balance best with the reel closer to your hand.
On the high end presentation glass rods I've been doing, though, I've been using an REC down lock seat. It seems to be the most acceptable combination. I honestly don't think the reel seat type much matters, if the seat is a quality one that holds the reel well. |

I voted down locking. I prefer down locking on all of my trout rods(4/5/7wt), that said, I want up locking on my salt water, steelhead, and salmon rods.
Looking at the rods I have, I see that I have both types in all styles, go figure. What I prefer doesn't seem to matter if I like the rod's
action/casting performance. Respectfully RV Reclus

I voted downlocking as well. My poor casting technique means that DL tangles less, but DL also seems to give me a little more flexibility in hand position,
although that's affected by the grip a lot.
FYI, this is solely for my trout rods, which are usually geared to smaller water. Bob |

Interesting results from the poll. Looks like the down-lock seat is the most popular. My personal preference is the up-lock due to the reel setting a little
farther from the mud when lining the rod. I have passed on several rods that I would love to own because they had sliding bands reel seats. I have little
experience with these seats and a phobia about dropping a reel with the sliding bands. I have one rod with sliding bands and cork seat that I have yet to
fish. The reel fits nice and snug but.............. For those of you who fish this type of seat, are there any reel security issues? Any further comments
would be appreciated. Thanks to all who participated and the great comments.

Sliding bands and locking rings really vary. I've never had an issue with the rings but have with a slide band. Some I have are very reliable and there's others I won't trust. I didn't vote due to having no strong preference. |

Any kind of seat as long as it's down-locking.
Every trout rod I own is downlocking and I have spent the bucks required to have a few seats swapped at birth. |

I have a couple slide bands that sometimes fall off. I really just need to check them periodically when fishing. I've heard the "keep the reel out
of the dirt when lining" argument for uplocking, but I've always figured I could spend 60 seconds taking a little care when lining, and then spend the
rest of the day with my reel where I want it. Of course, there's a decent chance that the reel (and rod) will get dropped while wading or scrambling
around anyway.
