I think that most of the carbon fibers are in the tip area. I was casting the rod with a Rio Closer 10wt. I would personally like to try the rod with a 12wt line. The rod is rated for 300 to 400 grain (sinking) lines as well. Most for the TFO guys seem to like the rod with a 9wt line. If you like a very fast rod, I would use the 9wt. I see one in my future as a baby tarpon and stripper out of a boat rod. The Blue Water series are designed to lift. I think it would also work for big salmon in small streams. If you want a short multi piece mostly S glass heavy weight rod, I'd say at least give this rod a look. Robert. "Some paths are best not taken alone" John W. Barfield

Maybe testing the water so to speak and eventually get a 7,8 or 9w bass rod in production?

The TICRX line has a 7'6" 6wt and a 7'6" 8wt. They are more like 8 and 10 wts. fast as greased lightning... They have specifically been reluctant to come out with anything else that might make people have the assumption that you just proposed. Lord knows I've been pestering them to do something. I'm still pushing for a 7'9" 5wt glass rod, but I don't think that there is enough market for TFO to do it. You never know what Rick will do. Robert. "Some paths are best not taken alone" John W. Scott and Lamiglas also made glass/graphite rods for big water fishing, although Lami dropped theirs a couple years back. The TFO Blue Water and this MiniMagnum sound like rods designed for catching fish, not just distance casting. I get sick of the articles where authors brag about how many graphite rods they exploded on their outing (all abuse covered under warantee, no doubt). Let's see those fools break this puppy! I find it's interesting that the rod is rated for 300-400 grain lines, rather than with a line weight. By avoiding a line designation, TFO doesn't have to produce three different rods to cover the range of 10-12 weight. Smart. A similar 7'10" rod optimized for a 220-280 grain range WOULD be the perfect tournament bass rod. Tom

I'll be honest and after my 1st impression, I like the Sage LMB and SMB rods better, but I will need to cast the MM with some heavier lines to make my final judgements. I think a 10 wt is a bit light for the rod and not optimal for this rod. The rod responds best with a choppy cast, much like a Sage LMB rod. Just need to try other lines. I will say that the rod has those huge striper guides that Lefty likes, that I think are way to big for the rod. It has three of them! I've also never seen one of the Blue water rods come back under warrenty. I'll check into that. I too would like to see one optimized for 220-280 grain range. They told me this is the last of the Blue Water line, but you never know, thay said that with the last one they put in the line. Robert. "Some paths are best not taken alone" John W. Barfield

Looks like a nice rod for a specific purpose. I also think that grain description (vs. line weight) is a good way to label rods. Who cares about the line numbers when the current lines are all over the board. Now if all line companies would specify their grain weight on the box, like Rio does, that would be very helpful, too. Thinking about it, Rio Outbound 9 or 10 wt (375 or 424 gr) might be a good match for it, equivalent of 12 or 13wt standard line grain load. Last Edited By: musicar 08/28/08 07:36:05. Edited 1 times.

A new composite line of 6,7 and 8 weight rods would be a great idea. I would love one for saltwater fishing. Fine flyrods can be made from different materials, but bamboo is the Benchmark against which all the rest are compared......
