Repainting and repairing an old Battenkill |
Lead | |
|
Picked this up a year or two ago at an antique shop for about $40. Nice little, light reel, but with the paint damage it is already not collectible, so was
thinking about having it repainted by someone who knows what they are doing. The reel also has sort of a wicked little shimmy in it when you pull off line.
Has a nice sounding click when pulling line off slower, but as you speed up it goes from singing to sort of screetching and there is a noticable harsher little
vibration to it. Any ideas on the cause of this, and any recommendations for a good reel repairman. Thanks.

I can't help you with a paint shop. I would probably knock off the loose flakes and fish with it.

I have one that looks identical. Mine had a line weight sticker in the same place. I never thought about painting it...too costly (from discussions on earlier
threads). Like Tom said, I knocked off the paint flakes, gave it a good vinegar bath and lubed. Still looks abused, but works really well.

I agree with just cleaning it up and giving it the "Bulldog" treatment and fishing with it. I think these older reels look just fine with all that
wear and paint chipping. It's this old magical character I think that gives them real (reel?) charm. I imagine the years and years of memories built into
these old but beautiful reels and it somehow seems wrong to paint them and make them try to look "new."

If you would rather get rid of it...let me know...
Just kidding, but that is a gorgeous sounding reel, and just leave it alone and fish the heck out of it! Andy |

what a great reel.
I would wax it and fish it. The bronze finish that is showning is the old-style anodizing or leading (bronzing). It protects the cast frame from corrosion - I wouldn't risk removing it. I would wax over it and fish it. |

quillg wrote: Yeah, but this sounds really nasty, and doesn't take much to get it to happen. It happens quite readily. I doubt it was built to make this noise, otherwise no one would have ever bought it. It sounds nice at first but suddenly switches and sounds awful. And you can feel the reel start to sort of slow or bog down slightly and set up these fast low amplitude vibrations. I am not doing a good job of describing it, but if you hear it, you know something isn't right. |
