Shakespeare FY 12-R? |
Lead | |

Any information on this rod? On the Shakespeare Wiki page there is a blank out beside it, other than it is an 8' 3-piece rod made for 7/8 wt. Most all of
the other FY rods seem to be early 70s and I was wondering if this one was as well - Thanks -

It is probably a more recent Shakespeare rod. See this earlier thread for the few details we
know. Don't break the bank chasing one as the supply seems to be plentiful. I don't have a clue if it casts well or not.

Reckon we'll know next week when it comes - paired with the same reel that Pearow mentioned in his post. Must be a starter kit - it'll be great for one
of the kids anyway - live and learn -

From the Shakespeare website, the company put the rod length on its rod models during the early 1980's. The pdf that the company has made available on the
website this particular model isn't listed, but from comments I've found on the internet it's most likely a foreign made rod.

I bought a FY 12-R this year from another forum member. My search for a Purist Wonderod hasn't led me to anything yet and I couldn't resist the urge to
buy. NevadaK is probably correct that it is foreign made. Tom(jgestar)'s hint that it is a budget priced rod is on target.
I've used it at the local pond and on one fishing trip to "The Bayou". It performed well enough for my modest casting. Haven't used it more because I mostly fish for bream for which a 7/8 is a bit much and my many other rods also deserve some use. The FY 12-R is chocolate brown in color has dark chocolate guide wraps with white trim that appears to be tape. The male ends of the mid and tip sections have black rubber? caps and the unfinished butt ends of these show a weave that looks a lot like a woven glass. So it isn't a Wonderod. The striper looks ceramic to me. There are five snake guides and a standard size tiptop. It has a hook keeper The cork grip is a full wells. The uplocking reel seat is slightly frosted aluminum and fits into the reel seat itself and not into the cork. |

Which Purist are you looking for? The FYA-910 UL, 7 ft, 5 wt? I have a few rods I am thinking about selling and that is one of them. Donny |

I have one sitting on my desk now. 8 ft, 3 piece, butt over tip, eva foam grip, plastic downlocking reeel seat, 5 guides not counting the tiptop or ceramic
stripper, simple hook keeper. Label says Shakespeare Fiber glass FY 12-R 8'0" #7/8 line. On the reel seat cap is a sticker saying "Made in
China". Brown blank, dark brown wraps with spiral pattern, white trim wraps. I think I've seen one rated for 5/6.
Tip heavy like most butt over tips I've encountered. It casts "okay" and seems a 7 wt to me. I use it mostly in my little canoe when exploring along with an inexpensive reel. I've been know to swim spontaneously in such circumstances and won't be heartbroken if it breaks or fails to surface with me. I have worse casting rods. I think I paid $13.00 or so off devilbay not long ago and it came with a sock and tube the seller had failed to mention. That considerably enhanced the buy. So, useable, not a wonderrod (I've a couple and they are much better IMHO) but I'll likely not buy another unless the one I have fails to float someday. Hayden |

mine fishes fine; it's not quiet as nice casting as some of the Howard process rods, but its a good fisheable rod-p-

So my FY 12-R came in - looks just like your descriptions. The sticker on the butt says "Made in Korea" - the Shakespeare Alpha reel that came with
it is plastic and seems to be broken at some point, will keep, but probably not use. I put a made in china 1594 1/2 medalist on it and it seems to be fine. I
have a 7 wt line in the garage that I'm going to try on it, should make a fine setup for a bass rod for my 8 year old, whether he destroys it or not -

I have one that I stripped down years ago, rebuilt with a fighting butt, uplocking reel seat and enough guides and have used on trips to Florida for Redfish,
Snook, Peacock bass and anything else that swims. I fish it with a saltwater Rio Closer 7wt., but it will handle an 8 if needed, as most casts are only about
35 ft. It has a very strong butt and is a bit tippy, but the rod fishes fine, not the most gracefull, but for these fish it is not needed. I have much more
expensive rods that don't work any better. Mine was made in Korea.

Thanks - I was thinking about replacing the grip and reel seat - and possibly the guides because the tip top is extremely small, and it almost looks like the
sections were dipped after the guides were added and there is polyurethane or something running up the sides of the guides -

I would rebuild the rod. I used citristrip on mine.
It became a much better rod. I've also rebuilt one for a friend and it is his favorite bass rod. He uses an 8wt on his.

Nice. Did you keep the same guide spacings? What hardware did you use?

No, I used all new guidespacing, nine guides. The reel seat was original, I just turned it around and made it an uplocker. I turned the grip and fighting butt.
Pac bay guides.
