New rod. Anyone know when these were made? Can anyone recommend a reel for this rod?

I'm too new to the site to recommend a reel for your new rod but I just wanted to say it's a beauty! Thanks for sending photos.

A real jewel, I have a 1963 catalogue, back then they were Mrk !-4 so yours predates those. That yours is a" Pro-weight" and from your pictures I
would say its a mid to high grade rod from the late 50s or early 60s. I would need to see the ferrules, reel seat and each guide to tell you a little more.
Perhaps pin it down to a specific year, however I would guess around 1959 from your posted pictures and 7-8wt. by todays standards. Its a very sharp look rod
however, thanks for posting it.
Richard One thing would be the reel seat hoods, Allen vs others, another would be the ferrule, also the tip top guide, all help place the year of mfg.

Those old Heddons look great with Medalists. 495, 1496, 1498, any would work well.
Is gonna make a fun bass rod! KEtih |

This is exactly why I love our forum. Your rod is what I would call a retro version of the much older 50 series and one Ive never seen before. (glass ferruled
tip into butt) this system of glass ferrules was used much by discount (read very early glass Japanese-Korean made rods) I have a couple such from around 1980
in my collection. Yours is the first Ive heard of from Heddon, frantastic, would love to get my hands on one strickly from a collector standpoint. You really
scored one on this one for sure. While alot of people will scoff on this particular form of ferruling, my examples have had no problems and other than cheap
guides and of course to few they exhibit alot potiential for a rebuiild with better guide placement.
Richard BTW I have the same reel you have its a great 5/6wt but your gonna need to find a bit larger one for this rod but its for sure a fine looking rod and reel

Actually, from that glass sleeve ferrule, I would guess your rod is from the 70s. Very late 60s at the earliest. The ProWeight rods were made with metal
ferrules in 1966 (see the Heddon Wiki page).
Sleeve ferrules didn't start appearing on non-Fenwick rods until the very late 60s, early 70s. I have a ProWeight model 8651 with glass sleeves that is
not as cosmetically cool as yours. I love that translucent look!
Perhaps yours was a special Golden 50th anniversary of Heddon selling fly rods? That would put it at 1974. Tom |

Yea could be for sure, never seen this one before, its a late model and great looking, I would guess it could have continued into around 1980 just because I
have a couple of similiar ferruled rods from then but sure is fun to see one on a Heddon. Thanks again for posting your pics,

Tom and Richard,
That makes sense! I had already looked at the wiki and noticed the 1966 listing and I knew that didn't match. Have you noticed the previous posting in Rod Pictures by Barck? It looks like he has the same rod but smaller. I was lawn casting w/ WF 8 and like the way it casts so I'm fishing it! As always thanks for your input. Allan |

I think Tom hit upon it, most likely a 1974 aniversary retro rod, it sure is great looking though. I sure would like to find one for myself after seeing yours.

I think a Heddon rod would want a Heddon Reel. The first one that comes to mind is the Heddon Imperial 125. This is a fine reel to be sure. There is also the
lightwt copies that Heddon sold I think a 330 or 340 would do the job of balancing your rod.
I like the English reels and the J. W. Young Beaudex or Pridex comes to mind. I like the lightwt style and the 3.5" reels come in a narrow, medium and wide spool. I use the narrow spool on my 8.5' trout rods but I step up to the wide for the big game set up. . .
The Hardy perfect is one of my favorites, but I'm a LHW guy so mine are the Winstons and the Bougles. Just a few I thought of, enjoy that rod. Alan

Hi guys,
I am new to this, but I have This rod in an 8ft 6 " 8 wt. and also in a 6ft 6" version for 5 wt. The only info I can find is that pro weight rods were lighter than regular series rods. Cant find any production year or model info. Would love some info, because these are my favorite glass rods. |

Arkansas Scott,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! You have a couple of nice glass rods already. I have never seen a catalog listing the Golden Mark 50 rods. As I speculated above, maybe they were made around 1974 to mark 50 years of Heddon rods. But that is just a guess. The glass ferrules would indicate a late 60s to early 70s rod. I hadn't started flyfishing yet in the early 70s, so I don't recall seeing these rods in the local tackle shops. Tom |

I have to agree with Tom, I have sense our last posts picked one one and its definately a "Retro" pro series rod, the fourth Series to Carry the Pro
Weight designation. The heavier longer rods are so so, but you picked up a jewel in the shorty 5wt if you can please post some pictures of this rod, most likely
you will make the members here come to attention, I know the idea of it definately has my attention. I think Tom is right now though, guessing they were only
offered for a very short time. Perhaps just the aniversary year, Ive seen few for sale.
