I found a Sal-Trout in my collection of old reels and wondered what years those were produced? Thanks -

It's a Sal-Trout 1554. Man, that is one heck of a clicker! Thanks for the info -

They were made from the early 20s (I've seen some with the oldest style bulldog, so maybe the teens) up to WWII
they reintroduced a "retro" version in 1955 and ran until about 1965 The dates on the Pflueger website are Very Generic. If you contact Pflueger with specific questions, they will direct you to ORCA members for specific answers. |

Are there any markings on the reel to indicate whether it is an orginal or a "retro"?

Where would I look if in fact there are identifying marks? Thanks!

the frame backplate
If it has a pattern of drilled holes, it's a retro reel. If it has kind of a Maltese cross pattern, it's a prewar reel
btw, you can't date them by the handle color as some will tell you. I have seen amber-handled reels with the latter-pattern bulldog stamping, and black-handled reels with the earliest-pattern bulldog stamping.

and to throw this one in the mix, the 1555 salmon-sized Sal-trout (this one had the paint stripped)
all brass and heavy enough for a big bamboo rod.

Thanks - Mine has the patterned, pre-drilled holes, so it's a retro - Thanks for all of the great info -
