First I would like to say hello to all as this is my first post on this sight.My name is Allen I am an avid fly fisherman and flytyer since the age of 13 I fish many streams here in the Pocono's and central Pa. . I recently got the itch to fish fiberglass and have been buying glass rods at verious flea markets and yard sales. I managed to find a nice Phillipson Challenger 76R-3 3/4-HDH and am looking to get it restored the furles pop when taken down the cork and reel seat are in excellent condition probably should replace all snake guides and tiptop and stripping guide, strip and refinnish the blank. I'm interested in what it would cost to do the job and the appox. value of the rod any info would be greatly appreciated and thank you much in advance

Allen,
Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! If you have an itch to fish glass, you are in the right place. If the ferrules, cork, and reelseat are in good shape, the rod is easily restored. You can do the work yourself, even if it is your first rewrap. Materials costs would probably be in the $40 or less range, depending on how much stuff you want to buy vs. borrow. Otherwise, there are quite a few guys on the board who build/restore rods. I would recommend that you put a post in the Rod Building forum describing what you want done and asking guys to contact you. The value of the rod before the restore is probably about $50 and after about $100. Before you invest much time or money, you should take the rod out in the yard for a test run. If the guides are too rusty/rough, give them a quick cleanup with some 320 grit wet/dry paper first. After all, if you are going to replace the guides, they only have to last a short time. If you like how it feels, go for the restoration. Tom |

Welcome Allen. I'm new to the site too and I can tell you that you've come to the right place for advice and knowledge on glass rods. Not from me,
I'm too new, but some of these other guys have incredible skills and knowledge to share. I recently bought a Phillipson MF80 Master and I can tell you that
I love this rod, it's one of my treasures. From what I've heard I think you'll be happy with any Phillipson. Good luck with the restoration. Keep

One cavet, if the blank looks great use a modern Varnish to restore it with a UV inhibitor, the original did not contain it and prolonged exposure to sunlight
can really distroy those early rods.
