Went to a buddy's cabin, just outside of Grayling, MI, over the 4th of July, holiday.
The first full day I was there, I went out with a buddy, Alex C. He's a new member on the glass forums. Alex writes the Day Tripper Blog, and he's a recent convert to 'glass.
Here he is checking out a nice stretch of the North Branch of the Au Sable River. We were hoping to hit the Trico hatch but it hadn't started at that time. Turns out we were a week early. The fish are smaller in this section but when the trikes are on, it's like catching bluegills. We had to resort to actually stalking likely lies. I say this because I got skunked that morning. Alex caught a few but I don't have his pics. It was a great time to try out the SLR in some broad daylight with the polarizing filter.
Definitely one of the more scenic rivers you're going to come across.
If you ever wanted to see the exact moment of an epiphany, this is it. Frank Cappa may have caught moments like this, in war zones, but I don't like getting shot at. This is the exact moment when Alex decided he liked fiberglass rods. I'd brought along Joe C.'s (Cornmuse), McFarland 10th anniversary 6'-9", 3wt, with a 4wt Kreh line. Notice the really tight loop. He went home and bid/won two glass rods on ebay. They won't all cast like Joes fairy wand, but I'd say the boy's a goner.
After the fishing, we headed into Grayling, to a well known establishment, for lunch.
Anyplace where you can wear waders and get a beer is okey-dokey by me.
The OFFICIAL Obligitory Food Shot (Spike Burger and a Bass Ale...., MMMmmmmmm)
I came to find out that the spare tire well on Alexs' Subaru, makes a great tackle box. He also claims that it has a drain plug so you can fill it with ice and 'beverages'. Schweet! I'll have to see if my Outback works the same way. I'll have to find something to do with that pesky spare tire.
On the way back to my buddy's place, I stopped at Gates Lodge. Didn't get any pics of the inside but suffice it to say that during the Hex hatch, it was packed.
More to come....
