Reason was - I didn't know how to do it. HA!
Earlier this morning, I had to drive 20 miles across the capital to attend a meeting.
Gladly the meeting is adjourned earlier that it was supposed to.
So I had 2 solid hours of free time.
I only had the National Botanical Garden in mind at the time.
Somewhere in there, I realise lie a small water reservoir that is teeming with Carps., Perches, Barbels, Snakeheads...etc.
But all I had in my fly box was a few beadhead nymphs - balance from the last Mahseer trip.
Seriously, I never caught a carp on a nymph before today.
And I hardly do nymphing on stillwaters.
Maybe it's the new McFarland or the surprisingly good weather, I don't know - but today is truly blessed!
It's not that small of a reservoir - resembles a lot like a slow-flowing river. Water is kinda clear - the type where you can see schools of striking-colored tropical fish swim by. From the looks of it, it has been recently upgraded & refurbished after a long abandonment. And surprisingly the weather is mighty fine today - compared to the previous continuous heavy downpour...
Make my first move on this little fellow - a juvenile Jungle Perch...
I'm casting right on top of the dam wall. Work suit - minus the tie...
A school of Red Tilapia swimming merrily. At first this bunch slammed on the nymph like there's no tomorrow. But after the 3rd, they started to ignore the offering. These guys learn real quick...!
A Big-Head Carp followed suit. This fish is covered in ultra-thick slime. I had to wash my hands few times before I can grip the rod properly...
A "Sultan Fish". It jumps... it runs... HARD! Besides being a much much better contender on a fiberglass rod, it's river cousins fetch a really high price on the meathunters' market...
Really... nymphing in stillwater is new to me. What I did was cast to a prospect spot, wait a minute before I proceed with a figure-8 stripping. That is all! But once you got a strong take, it's really mind-boggling. The element of surprise, baby...
A Rohu. Great powerful runs. All fish took a simple #12 Red Beadhead nymph tied with some chenille & dubbing...
